Czech Republic Telecommunications Report Q3 2010

BMI's Q3 2010 update on the Czech Republic's telecommunications market contains the latest operational and financial data
published by the country's leading network operators; they include Telefónica O2 Czech Republic, which is the country's fixed-line
incumbent and largest mobile operator and in which Spain's Telefónica has a controlling interest. They also include the second- and
thirdranked cellcos, T-Mobile Czech Republic, which is backed by Germany's Deutsche Telekom, and Vodafone Czech Republic of
the UK's Vodafone Group. The three major mobile operators in the Czech market had almost 13.5mn subscribers between them at
the end of December 2009, reflecting a market penetration of almost 131%. A fourth mobile operator, U:fon, has struggled to pose
significant challenge to the three GSM operators using its CDMA-based mobile network.
The three major mobile operators have stepped up the competition between them towards attracting highvalue customers onto
postpaid contracts. Having deployed 3G networks, and in some cases HSPA technology in selected cities, customers are offered
attractive monthly bundles with voice and data allowances. At the end of December 2010, each of the country's three mobile
operators had a postpaid subscriber base of more than 50%. On the other hand, U:fon, which reinvented itself as a low-cost mobile
operator in January 2010, is expected to target the low-usage end of the market with competitive prepaid service offerings.
This quarter shows contrasting trends in the mobile data services sector. While operators offering mobile broadband services saw
very rapid subscriber uptake in the second half of the year, especially in the fourth quarter, they also reported a sharp drop in ARPU
from data services. This is indicative of the value-led approach adopted by the operators to fend off the competition. Vodafone and
Telefónica O2 introduced discounts on their mobile broadband services for both data tariffs and internet dongles between 2008 and
2009. This resulted in an uptrend for new subscriber uptake but a downtrend for ARPUs from data services
In the fixed sector, incumbent operator Telefónica O2 reported strong demand for naked ADSL that was introduced in the first half of
2009. Although this resulted in net additions to its fixed business, the number of subscribers to its traditional telephony services
continued to decline, albeit at a slower pace. The adoption of a more competitive pricing strategy for its fixed-line services has helped
slow the decline in subscriber numbers while boosting the amount of minutes for outgoing and incoming calls on its fixed network.
The Czech Republic maintains the second position in our latest set of Business Environment Ratings for Central and Eastern Europe.
This is due to a slightly weaker Telecoms Market score, which reflects flat or falling mobile ARPUs in the fourth quarter of 2009,
despite an improved Country Risk rating, which increased to 64.4 up from 60.6 in the previous quarter.

Czech Republic Telecommunications Report Q3 2010 Published on June 2010 Report Summary BMI's Q3 2010 update on the Czech Republic's telecommunications market contains the latest operational and financial data published by the country's leading network operators; they include Telefónica O2 Czech Republic, which is the country's fixed-line incumbent and largest mobile operator and in which Spain's Telefónica has a controlling interest. They also include the second- and thirdranked cellcos, T-Mobile Czech Republic, which is backed by Germany's Deutsche Telekom, and Vodafone Czech Republic of the UK's Vodafone Group. The three major mobile operators in the Czech market had almost 13.5mn subscribers between them at the end of December 2009, reflecting a market penetration of almost 131%. A fourth mobile operator, U:fon, has struggled to pose significant challenge to the three GSM operators using its CDMA-based mobile network. The three major mobile operators have stepped up the competition between them towards attracting highvalue customers onto postpaid contracts. Having deployed 3G networks, and in some cases HSPA technology in selected cities, customers are offered attractive monthly bundles with voice and data allowances. At the end of December 2010, each of the country's three mobile operators had a postpaid subscriber base of more than 50%. On the other hand, U:fon, which reinvented itself as a low-cost mobile operator in January 2010, is expected to target the low-usage end of the market with competitive prepaid service offerings. This quarter shows contrasting trends in the mobile data services sector. While operators offering mobile broadband services saw very rapid subscriber uptake in the second half of the year, especially in the fourth quarter, they also reported a sharp drop in ARPU from data services. This is indicative of the value-led approach adopted by the operators to fend off the competition. Vodafone and Telefónica O2 introduced discounts on their mobile broadband services for both data tariffs and internet dongles between 2008 and 2009. This resulted in an uptrend for new subscriber uptake but a downtrend for ARPUs from data services In the fixed sector, incumbent operator Telefónica O2 reported strong demand for naked ADSL that was introduced in the first half of 2009. Although this resulted in net additions to its fixed business, the number of subscribers to its traditional telephony services continued to decline, albeit at a slower pace. The adoption of a more competitive pricing strategy for its fixed-line services has helped slow the decline in subscriber numbers while boosting the amount of minutes for outgoing and incoming calls on its fixed network. The Czech Republic maintains the second position in our latest set of Business Environment Ratings for Central and Eastern Europe. This is due to a slightly weaker Telecoms Market score, which reflects flat or falling mobile ARPUs in the fourth quarter of 2009, despite an improved Country Risk rating, which increased to 64.4 up from 60.6 in the previous quarter.
