    • Laika, a Russian dog was launched into space on Sputnik 2. It became the first animal to orbit the Earth.

  • On April 12, 1961…
    • Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space and the first man to orbit the Earth in his Vostok 1 spacecraft.

  • On June 16, 1963…
    • Valentina Tereshkova was launched into space aboard Vostok 6. She became the first woman to travel in space.

    • She spent almost three days in space.

    • Neil Armstrong, an American astronaut, became the first human being to set foot on the Moon. He was the commander of the Apollo 11 lunar module, and was accompanied by Edwin E. Aldrin.
