Female reproductive anatomy

  1. 1. HUMAN REPRODUCTION
  2. 2. The female external reproductive structureinclude the following• Clitoris• Two sets of labia: Labia MajoraLabia Minora
  3. 3.  The female internal organs are the following• Pair of gonads(ovaries)• Ducts (oviducts/fallopian tubes)• Chambers (uterus, vagina, vulva)
  4. 4.  Female gonads are the OVARIES. Each ovary contains many follicles, which consist of apartially developed egg called an oocyte, surroundedby support cells. Once a month, an oocyte develops into an ovum (egg)by the process of oogenesis. Ovulation is the release of an egg cell from thefollicle. The remaining follicular tissue grows within theovary, forming the corpus luteum.
  5. 5.  The corpus luteum secretes hormones thathelp to maintain pregnancy. If the egg is not fertilized the corpus luteumdegenerates.
  6. 6.  After ovulation, the egg travels from theovary to the uterus via an oviduct, or fallopiantube. Cillia in the oviduct convey the egg to theuterus also called the womb The uterus lining, the endometrium, hasmany blood vessels. The uterus narrows at the cervix, then opensinto the vagina
