Why Bother with HPC at All?Making effective use of supercomputing takes quite a bitof effort, both learning how and developing software.That seems like a lot of trouble to go to just to get yourcode to run faster.It’s nice to have a code that used to take a day, now runin an hour. But if you can afford to wait a day, what’sthe point of supercomputing?Why go to all that trouble just to get your code to runfaster? 15
  17. 17. Why HPC is Worth the Bother…What HPC gives you that you won’t getelsewhere is the ability to dobigger, better, more exciting science.If your code can run faster, that meansthat you can tackle much bigger problemsin the same amount of time that you usedto need for smaller problems. 16
  18. 18. Why HPC is Worth the BotherHPC is important not only for its ownsake, but also because what happensin HPC today will be on your desktopin about 10 to 15 years: it puts youahead of the curve. 17
  19. 19. The Future is NowHistorically, this has always been true: Whatever happens in supercomputing today will be on your desktop in 10 – 15 years.So, if you have experience withsupercomputing, you’ll be ahead of thecurve when things get to the desktop. 18
