Representation case study_yr_13[1]

 1. 1. Representation Case study
Ranjot Rai
2. 2. Intro
I will be looking at the representation of men in the media, as in magazines and other platforms how they are portrayed as sex objects and are sexually objectified in today's media.
I've chosen this as, there has always been talk about the ‘Male gaze’ and how women are seen as sex objects, whereas the talk about men being objectified has been minimal.
3. 3. Men as sexual objects
The recent craze over the teen Taylor lautner from the twighlight series.
Who has a huge female fan base which voyeur over his muscular frame.
4. 4. Mike ‘The Situation’ from Jersey Shore
Who is known for his 6 Pac, indicating his sexual appeal and his body as a gaze for female audiences.
5. 5. David Beckham, Has had many photo’s, Photo shoots, calendars, and snap shots of him topless and in underwear for advertising campaigns.
6. 6. Theorists
Laura Mulvey – ‘Gaze’
David Gauntlett – ‘Girl Power’
7. 7. Male gaze
Is the voyeurism of men by females, for their pleasure. Its the exact reversal of Mulveys female gaze, which has been looked at a lot.
8. 8. Female gaze
This is the objectification of women and the subordinating them for pleasurable viewing by audiences in particular the males.
9. 9. PLATFORMS.......
10. 10. E- media
Online there is a lot of images such as on Google images of men who have modelled and been shown topless and sexually objectified.
11. 11. Print
There is not a lot of print, as female usually dominate the print magazines and papers. Although there are elements of men being sexually objectified.
Although in magazines such as ‘Heat’ Magazine there is the ‘Torso of the week’ page is which is an A4 picture of a topless male celebrity.
12. 12. Broadcast
There is more elements of men being shown as objectified on TV and film as there is an increasing fan base for the likes of Robert Pattison and Taylor Lautner from Twighlight. Who appear on TV in the film and are objectified by their sex appeal and continuous removal of their tops
13. 13. Theories and Areas to look at..
14. 14. Desensitization
Is the effect on audiences. How they become more relaxed around seeing images or scenes which would have been very wrong explicit 50 years ago.
Such as if a woman walks into a bar wearing next to nothing, everyone would see it as normal. Due to the male gaze and its many years of portrayal.
Whereas if a man was to do the same, he would get starred at as audiences are not desensitized to this concept as of yet
15. 15. Metro Males
The era of the metro males is upon us, where men would tend to groom themselves and be more conscious of their appearance. As they have become more metro and feminine in some terms.
