Critical investigation 2010-11[1]

 1. 1. Critical Investigation

RanjotRai

2. 2. Despite the success of ‘SlumdogMillionaire’ Why is there still a lack of South Asian actors in Hollywood
Appeals to me very highly
No one else seems to have questioned itsomething I have been curious about for a while.
Unique idea
3. 3. Linked production – Opening sequence of a film.
Opening of a film
Basic and stereotypical conventions of the genre selected.
Place an ‘Asian’ Character in the role of a ‘White’ actor
4. 4. MIGRAIN
Media Language -
Institution – Hollywood (Bollywood?)
Genre – Yet to chose (Not Comedy) Action or drama preferences
Representation – Asians in Hollywood
Audience – Asians and other ethnic groups
Narrative – Stereotypical, Basic, Easy to graspPowerful enough to take some attention off the actors ethnicity
5. 5. SHEP
Social impacts on audiences and how they feel about the subordination of Asians
Historical – How Asians have been portrayed in the media in the past and how this reflects today's media and society.
Economical – Not an issue that effects my topic
Political - Is there any element of racism
6. 6. Issues/Debates
Representation and stereotyping - Is there an effect to the stereotype of South Asians, that restricts them being seen as individuals rather than as a group.
Post 9/11 (Moral Panics) - Bollywood - ‘My name is khan’- related to Muslims and terrorism - filmed in America and screened in cinemas worldwide.
Ownership and Control - Would there be an influence played by the owners of media firms and filming company’s who would frown upon casting an unknown South Asian actor as opposed to an unknown actor in general?
Media Technology and the digital revolution - changing technologies in the 21st century and how they are impact movies which would take focus and attention away from the question of equal opportunities in media.
7. 7. Theories
Gender and ethnicity - Small roles given to both genders of the south Asian ethnic groups to have cameo roles in American TV and film. What’s restricting them from appearing in bigger productions?
Audience Theory - Could there be an element to of what audiences would judge an actor by reputation, and due to audiences being more interactive, would this push directors away from casting smaller actors for bigger roles,
(Robert Pattison – Twighlight) broke through to be a star from virtually a nobody. Would race play a card in this theory?
Genre Theory - Could there be case for, there not being any film scripts or roles that are suitable for them. Although why cant South Asian actors act in contemporary genre's.
8. 8. Quotes
''What do Kal Penn Modi, ParminderNagra, and Sendhil Ramamurthy all have in common? Let me give you a hint Kal Penn, Sendhil, and Parminder are all doctors on television’’
- http://orvillelloyddouglas.wordpress.com/2007/11/28/south-asian-american-actors-can-they-just-be-doctors-on-television/
9. 9. Quotes
‘’Making it as a serious actor in Hollywood has always been the longest of career long shots. And if you are of Indian or Pakistani origin, chances are you may never even have glimpsed the target.’’- http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=story_25-3-2004_pg9_1
10. 10. Quotes
‘’Examples for Bollywoodslowly entering the western world can be easily displayed: Andrew Lloyd Webber successfully produced his new musical Bombay Dreams, Monsoon Wedding was a hit in Western cinemas, the album The very Best of Bollywood Songs recently reached the UK charts.’’
http://www.grin.com/e-book/27389/bollywood-the-history-and-key-elements-of-bombay-cinema-with-an-excursus
11. 11. Quotes
''When I started out as an actor there were no roles for Indians in Hollywood films or TV'' - AasifMandvi
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/8369002.stm
12. 12. Theories I could look further into
Cultural imperialism perspective – USADominating the worlds media
Post- Colonialism (Diaspora identity) - Looking past the white era.
13. 13. Do you recognise any of these people?
They are all Indian
They are on TV
Name them and any here you have seen them
http://www.imdb.com/list/YQh783-uV4s/
14. 14. Now name any of these people?
Or anything that you can associate with them
15. 15. How my research topic fits into contemporary media landscape
Slumdog Millionaire is a contemporary film
Asian actors in the Hollywood market are rare but more current
There’s evidence that shows the increase in Bollywood and Hollywood’s recent interest in Bollywood
16. 16.
