  • 2. American Colonies 5 – Canada and Iroquoia
    • After not being able to settle in the south due to the Spanish,the French decided to settle in the north where fish and furs made it profitable in the absence of being able to grow tropical crops

    • French had to make some alliances with Indian tribes and buy furs from them to make their trip over seas profitable
    • Furs were scarce in Europe so they demanded high prices there.

    • The Indians did all the work when it came to catching, killing and treating their furs but they became good at trade driving a hard bargain

    • In 1609 nine French soldiers with Northern Indian tribes attacked the Iroquoia and defeated them. The major advantage of the battle for the French was the guns
    • After the battle the Indians wanted their own guns and paid handsomely for them

    • At the end of the 17 th century the french founded a colony named Louisiana
    • The french could not have succeded without the help of the natives

    • In 1629 Quebec fell, they had less than 100 French colonists at the time
    • The population in New France was not growing nearly as much as the population of the British Colonies even though there were four times as many people in France than in Britain
    • Even though conditions were bad in France for some people they would choose to stay there rather than emigrate to New France because they wanted to remain where they knew what to expect
