Overview of Lower Ninth Ward Rebuilding Plan―In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time weve been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to bemanaged by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and ofthe people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has thecapacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear theburden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higherprice.‖ (Ronald Reagan, Jan 20, 1981)
N The red crosses are the points that were surveyed. Both sides of the road were surveyed, and then a bit at thetop of the landfill. The corners (lowest elevations) are points surveyed to show the difference in height from thepaved road to the top. Next slides show different views.
NGPS mapping ensures precision & accuracy in post-landfill surveying
NNote that elevation change (landfill buildup) rangedfrom 10 to 25 ft.

Prospect New Town, CO - STEP 2A - ―THE SOLAR COMMUNITY‖Solar Village Prospect developers are currently planning a "Solar Village" for inclusion in the development. Partly inspired by CUs 2002 Solar Decathlon project, the Solar Village will include housing and small commercial enterprises. Plans for CUs 2005 Solar Decathlon BioS(h)IP to be placed in Prospect New Town near the Solar Village are in motion. Following the 2005 Solar Decathlon competition, the CU Home will be displayed on the Boulder campus for six months before moving permanently to Prospect. Army Hawaii Family STEP 2A - ―THE SOLAR COMMUNITY‖ Housing Army Hawaii Family Housing is the largest privatization project awarded by the Army, serving more than 20,000 residents. At completion the project will include 7,894 homes at seven different installations and 19 separate sites on the island. The construction and renovation of these homes will be completed by 2015. Actus Lend Lease will continue to own, operate and manage the project through at least 2055. Families living in these neighborhoods will enjoy an environmentally-friendly, master- planned community that seamlessly integrates residents, homes, amenities and services. Several Community Centers will be completed during the initial development period, each one serving as the town center for individual villages. Army Hawaii Family Housing believes in protecting the environment and doing what we can to reduce energy costs andMary Schmidtke, executive conserve resources. Upon completion, Army Hawaii Family Housing will be theassistant at Actus Lend worlds largest solar powered community.Lease, displays solar Recycling trees and construction material is also on the forefront of this project.panels that will be part of Rather than having waste end up in landfills, Actus Lend Lease is reusingthe Army energy network demolition waste in asphalt and other building materials.
BedZed STEP 2A - ―THE SOLAR COMMUNITY‖BedZED, the Beddington Zero EnergyDevelopment, is an environmentally-friendly,energy-efficient mix of housing and workspace in Beddington, Sutton. BedZED willonly use energy from renewable sourcesgenerated on site. It is the first large-scale‗carbon neutral‘ community - i.e. the first notto add to the amount of carbon dioxide inthe atmosphere. BedZED shows howhousing can be built without degrading theenvironment. BedZED turns a formersewage works into a community of 100properties for sale and rent, a childcarefacility and plenty of green space, includingprivate gardens. The BedZED urban system reconciles highdensity three storey city blocks with highresidential and workspace amenity.Workspace is placed in the shade zones ofsouth facing housing terraces, withskygardens created on the workspace roofs, enabling all flats to have outdoor gardenareas, with good access to sunlight, at thesame time as providing well daylit workspacewithout problematic summer overheating. The combination of superinsulation, a winddriven ventilation system incorporating heatrecovery, and passive solar gain storedwithin each flat by thermally massive floorsand walls - reduces the need for bothelectricity and heat to the point where a 130kw wood fuelled chp station can meet theenergy requirements for a community ofaround 240 residents and 200 workers.
Hybrid Living STEP 2C – ―PLUG-IN VEHICLES—ONE WAY FLOW OF ELECTRICITY‖ Lithium Energy System: Our advanced Lithium battery technology is Home implemented into the house design and system infrastructure. The wind turbines and PV panels will charge the proprietary lithium battery system that in turn will provide for all of the electrical requirements of the home. Including the charging of our electric vehicles.
Dongtan, China STEP 3 – ―THE RENEWABLE ENERGY COMMUNITY‖ THE FUTURE NOWBritish engineering firm, Arup, is working as a strategic partner with ShanghaiIndustrial Investment Corporation (SIIC) on the integrated masterplanning for theworld‘s first sustainable city.At three quarters the size of Manhattan and located on the third largest island inChina at the mouth of the Yangtse river, Dongtan will be developed on 630hectares of land as a sustainable city to attract a range of commercial and leisureinvestments.Ecologically sensitive design will be a key element of the masterplan. The site ismostly agricultural land adjacent to a huge wetland of global importance. This willbe a significant opportunity to apply our integrated sustainability and urbanplanning expertise to the benefit of the eco-citySIIC’s vision is to create a development with low energy consumptionthat is as close to being carbon neutral as possible. This urban centre, where people will be able to live and work in a high-qualityenvironment, could be the template for sustainability in city planning, not only in China but elsewhere in the world. http://www.dongtan.biz/english/gywm/default.php
