● Vasectomy is a surgical procedure for male
sterilization and a method of permanent
birth control.
● During the procedure, the vasa deferentia of
a man are tied and separated to prevent
sperms from entering into the seminal
stream.

● The first recorded vasectomy was performed on a
dog in 1823 by Cooper from England.
● A short time after that, R. Harrison of London who
was a barber by profession performed the first
human vasectomy in 1924.
● The first vasectomy program on a national scale was
launched in 1954 in India.

● Vasectomy is a permanent method of birth
control and not easily reversible.
● Vasectomy is a safe and effective and is a day
care procedure requiring hospitalization for a
few hours only.

11. What To Expect After Surgery
● The scrotum will be numb for 1 to 2 hours after a
vasectomy.
● Wearing snug underwear or a jockstrap will help
ease discomfort and protect the area.
● There might be some swelling and minor pain in
the scrotum for several days after the surgery.

● Infection at the site of the incision.
● Sperm leaking from a vas deferens into the tissue around it
and forming a small lump (sperm granuloma).
● Inflammation of the tubes that move sperm from the testicles
( epididymitis).

● In rare cases, the vas deferens joins back
naturally (recanalization), and the man becomes
fertile again after many years.
● Hence any unexpected pregnancy after many
years should be first investigated by a sperm
count in the vasectomized male partner before
accusing the wife of infidelity.
