The integration of literature with language

  1. 1. THE INTEGRATION OF LANGUAGE WITH LITERATURELANGUAGELanguage, which consists of vast of signs, is way of communication. It has been used sincethe first human being. It is both living and developing. It has both long and debatable history, too. Some linguists believe that it is inherited. When a person is born, he or she brings thelanguage skills with him/her. On the other hand, some linguists believe that it is ready in ourbrains. When we see the linguistic symbols, we activate the language which already takes placein our brains. Some linguists however, believe that it is neither inherited nor already takes placein our brains. But the fact is that the language is a long and complicated process. How about the language teaching? While the language is so long and complicated, can weteach it easily? What can be done to overcome in this situation? Of course it is not so easy toteach language. There are so many ways to teach the language. It can be taught in anyway. Theteacher can use traditional methods, contemporary methods, and even drama techniques tosupport the teaching. The teacher can produce his/her own methods, too. However, the fact isthat it should be taught in an enjoyable way. Because we are to know that it is a long andcomplicated process. The students may be bored in learning process .In some situations. Theycan even produce psychological barriers. I mean they can say `It is so difficult, I can`t learn it.´ or`it is so boring and exhausting`etc.LITERATUREHow about the literature? Can it be used to support the language teaching? Is there anyinteraction between literature and language? The literature is the whole of writings of a specific language, period, people etc. It is a way ofliving. We use language to make literature and we use literature to give meaning to thelanguage. It is possible for us to show our feelings, ideas, actions ect. However, we can do allthese intensively via literature. I mean literature has deep meaning in itself. The purpose inusing the literature is to use language, show feelings, ideas, actions in an aesthetic and artisticway. In this circumstance, the literature becomes more enjoyable, interesting, and attractive. While it is so, why not to use literature when teaching the language? I mean to make the
  2. 2. learning process more enjoyable and informative. It can help the student get ride of his/herpsychological barriers, too. They can learn about the people in the past, traditions, people wayof living, feelings, ideas while learning the language at the same time. The literature can be usedto give meaning to the language learning/ teaching process.Collie and Slater (1987:3-6) support the inclusion of literature in the language classroom as itprovides valuable authentic materials, developes personal involvement and help contribute toreaders` cultural as well as language enrichment. These advantages, they move on to assert, canbe achieved provided the teacher use relevant appealing material to learners through the useof activities that promote involvement, reader response, and a solid integration betweenlanguage and literature. The usage of literature makes the language learning/teaching process much more enjoyable, interesting, and easy. The integration of literature and language in teaching/learning process, will help too much. One can feel the language while learning it. The literature can broaden thelearners horizon, imagination the power to comment on something. It can even give meaning to“What the language is and way to learn and to use the language.” It can also help the learnersexpress their feelings, ideas, anger, love, sadness, hate, actions, beliefs in an impressive way. Itcan help improve the learners´ language skills; reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Thelearners may even get love for reading. The learners can learn about a certain culture. Theyboth learn and live the language at the same time. The teachers indicate that they use literature in their English teaching practices• to broaden students´ horizons by giving them a knowledge of the classics of literature;• to improve students´ general cultural awareness;• to stimulate students´ creative and literary imagination and to develop theirappreciation of literature;• to introduce students to masterpieces in British and American Literature as an educativeexperience, and to add to students` knowledge of the world at large. (Akyel and Yalcin,1990:175)The language teachers should take into consideration that before teaching language, they should know the ways to make the student like the language. A good classroomenvironment and atmosphere is to be provided. Literary texts should be used. They can
  3. 3. study language structures with a literary book, text. It can make the student more active inlearning process.Building on previous reasons for the teaching of literature in a second language,Parkinson and Reid Thomas (2000; 9-11) add that it provides a good model for good writing;it is memorable, non-trivial and challenging, and it is also helps assimilate the rhythms of alanguage therefore facilitating intelligence and sensibility training.Does it work so easily; of course the answer is no. There may be challenges andobstacles in some situation.I mean if literary books, texts are used only as supporters forteaching, we can not expect students to become independent readers. They can not evendevelop love of literature.Lack of appreciation for literature in general due to traditional teaching methods andstigma attaced to it as being a difficult and uninteresting area also results in the students`further drawing themselves away from the literature. When teaching language, the literature shouldn´t be used as a tool that supports theteaching. It should be taken as a part of language. Both the language learners and theteachers should benefit from magical world of literature. It is to known that even a singleword of literature can bring us into the world of imagination. We can taste the languagebest in the literature. We can feel and live the language thanks to the literature. We canunderstand the deep meaning behind the language through the literature. Literature cansimplify the language teaching.“It isn´t enough for a person to know what to say, he/she is to know how to say.” (Aristo)
  4. 4. AESTHETIC WAY OF LIFE : LITERATURELiterature is a way of living; an action, an idea. Literature is a star, which is shining for us tosee our way in the darkness. It is a long process that doesn´t have an end. It is endless. It isforever . It is a passion. It is impossible to define what is the literature. Actually, every idea is a literature. However,my definition for literature is that it is the meaning of life, unique way of living. It is an art. It isadding color to life. It is a part of daily life. It is the ability to be able to see the deep meaningbehind the words. Literature is the words that are used to make a picture.“You are only two years older than me darling…” Christopher Plummer, addressing his Oscarstatuette after the 82-year-old was awarded the best Supporting Actor trophy. We use literature to express our feelings in an aesthetic way. Through the literature, we canhave a powerful effect on the people. We can make people believe in the way we believe. Theliterature helps the people come up with the different ideas. It helps people feel the beautybehind the life. It can help people make an integration between past and present. Throughliterature, people can see the difference between different periods of time.A NICE HABIT : READINGReading is the struggle to understand the written. It is an effort to have a huge imagination. It is done for different purposes; sometime for improving reading skills, sometime forunderstanding of different ideas. Sometimes, it is done to have power to comment onsomething in different aspects, though. It is the way to resolve the curiosity.Reading can be done in any way. We can read books, artickles, novels, stories etc. It is one ofthe most important materials for the developing of a person. It helps person developpsychologically, intellectually.“The man who does not read books has no advantage over the man that can not read them.”(Mark Twain)Reading is a multifaceted process involving word recognition, comprehension, fluency, andmotivation. Reading is making meaning from print. It requires that we:
