3. Internet usage in India
India has added 88 million Internet
users during 2008-2012 and now
has 137 million Internet
users, recording a 26% growth year-
on-year (YoY).
The population penetration rate for India stood at 11%.
China continues to have the highest number of Internet
users with 538 million users, adding 282 million Internet
users during 2008-2012 and a population penetration rate of
40%. Globally, there are 2.4 billion Internet users with a 8%
growth YoY and a population penetration rate of 35%.
Around 902 million Internet users were added during 2008-
2012.
4. Smart Phone usage in india
India has 44 million smartphone
subscribers as of Q4 2012, recording
a 52% growth YoY. However
smartphones account for only 4% of
the total subscribers.
China has the highest number of smartphone subscribers for
the quarter with 270 million subscribers, recording a 50% YoY
growth and 24% penetration rate. Globally, there are 1.1 billion
smartphone subscribers as of Q4 2012, recording a 42% YoY
growth and a 17% penetration rate.
5. Mobile vs Desktop Internet usage
Mobile Internet usage has surpassed Desktop
Internet usage in India in May 2012. However it must
be noted that this stat was derived from StatCounter
which claims of tracking over 900 million page views
from Indian IPs per month as of June 2012.

Mobile Internet accounts for 59.36% of the
total Internet usage in India, as of
December 2012, while Desktop Internet
accounted for 40.64% of the total Internet
usage in India.
Globally, Mobile Internet accounts for
13.95% of the Internet traffic as of
December 2012, while Desktop Internet
accounts for 86.05% of the total Internet
traffic.

9. Scope for revenue
Popularity of the website/app is the key. Initially, the
facilities in the web are offered free of cost - like
downloading of the mobile app, login, registration,
newsletters, etc. Eventually, some specialized
services will be charged at a reasonable cost.
The content is localized in the sense that a user can
set native city and city that he is visiting
Location-specific advertisement pop-up is one model
which we are working on.
Way forward: We work to achieve a cash breakeven
in three years and a book breakeven in five years.
