  5. 5. Why another workshop on Open Innovation?  OI is not for SMEs, especially if they are lowtech SMEs  SMEs have a role to play in OI ecosystems, but they get the backseat.  OI is only for multinationals, having adequate resources to allocate  Establish a culture of innovation in SMEs
  6. 6. Innovation : a definition • ..is creativity with a job to do • …is people creating value by implementing new ideas • …is the process of taking those ideas to market or to usefulness • …concerns the search for and the discovery, experimentation, development, imitation and adoption of new products, new processes and new organizational set ups • …is anything that provides a new perceived benefit to a customer or employee • … is …..
  7. 7. Innovation : a definition “Genius is 1% inspiration & 99 % perspiration” Innovation involves more than just great ideas.
  8. 8. Innovation : a definition “Invention is the instantaneous creation of an idea. Innovation is the process that converts that idea to a marketable product/service and takes it to the market place..”
  9. 9. Innovation = Technology ? Technology or R&DI results have per se’ no economic value IF they never reach the market. A technology, a product or a service has value if the client/user can take benefit / use / exploit it
  10. 10. Social Innovation • …is about new ideas that work to address pressing unmet needs • … innovations that are both social in their ends & in their means • …is new ideas (products, services & models) that simultaneously meet social needs (more effectively than alternatives) & create new social relationships or collaborations • (Open Book of Social Innovation, Murray, Calulier-Grice and Mulgan, March 2010)
  11. 11. Innovation : just a buzz? NO !!! • Many SMEs face severe commoditization pressure in their markets • Innovation => new ways to create value for customers
  12. 12. Innovation culture in SMEs • Sometimes SMEs DO have an (open) innovation culture but are NOT aware of it • Innovation = product innovation • Innovation is BUSINESS MODEL
