    • Overview of Juvenile Intake & Assessment Center (JIAC) What is JIAC? A collaborative effort of the Johnson County Department of Corrections, Johnson County Court Services, Kansas Children’s Service League, Regional Prevention Center and Responsive Centers.     • Youth and Family Services Center
      • Construction of the Youth and Family Services Center (YFSC) will commence in September 2009, with completion anticipated by the 1 st quarter 2011. The $17.5 million project is located across from the existing Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) at 915 Spruce Street in Olathe.
      • The primary focus of the YFSC is to convey a welcoming, inviting and non-threatening image to encourage troubled youth and families to use the services offered by the Family Resource Center (FRC) that will be located in this facility. Other functions in the facility include: Child In Need of Care (CINC), House Arrest, Administrative Services, Central Support Services (Building engineering services), Staff Training Center, 33 Minimum Security Detention Beds and Central Programs areas including Crossroads Counseling, Visitation, Recreation, and Education spaces.
    • Youth and Family Services Center
      • There are a number of different services that can be offered to youth and families. Services may include case management, substance abuse services, mental health services, family counseling, and anger management.
      • Youth in Police Custody
              • Youth can be brought to JIAC by any law enforcement officer. Youth can be brought in as either juvenile offenders or Children in Need of Care (CINC). If a child has been brought to JIAC, a police report has been written in his/her regard.
            • Fingerprints and DNA may be taken depending on why the youth has been brought to JIAC. This is done pursuant to Kansas statutes. JIAC staff will also complete state mandated and locally required screenings in order to offer appropriate services to youth and families.
      • Notice to Appear (NTA)
      • In some cases, law enforcement officers have discretion on whether to bring youth directly to JIAC or release them to parents with an NTA. In either case, JIAC is still mandated to screen the youth.
    • Youth and Family Services Center
      • Case Management
      • JIAC can provide up to twelve weeks of strengths-based case management free of charge to youth and their families. Case managers work closely with youth and families to set attainable goals in areas such as family relations, employment, extracurricular activities, and education. Case managers focus on strengths of youth and families while also empowering them to set their own goals. Case management services are voluntary but participation in case management is viewed favorably by the court and the District Attorney’s Office.
      • Child in Need of Care (CINC)
      • Some youth are in Police Protective Custody (PPC) and are considered Children In Need of Care (CINC). In these cases, the child will be placed in a foster home or shelter facility until a temporary custody hearing is held. If intake staff have any reason to believe a youth is not safe to return home, alternative placements may be pursued.
    • Youth and Family Services Center Community Referral Services The Community Referral Specialist (CRS), housed in the Regional Prevention Center, will provide information and referral assistance to Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center. The CRS will research and organize information regarding community services and programs in order to develop a database that will be easily accessible to juvenile workers. The CRS will provide ongoing training to service providers which will outline policies and procedures of information and referral programs. In addition, the CRS will provide outreach to community based organizations and linkage with providers, schools and community agencies and promote interagency collaboration. Caseworker Resource Center Johnson County has created a Caseworker Resource Center (CRC), which is a database that provides access to over 100,000 records from nine different information systems. Johnson County AIMS (Automated Information Mapping System) Department created and maintains the CRC.
    • Caseworker Resource Center The CRC is a web-based resource developed with the goal of increasing the likelihood of client success. The primary purpose of this tool is to equip Human Services professionals with information that increases the understanding of a client and their needs and to foster collaboration between departments serving the same individual or family. While the application has many features, Human Services professionals will largely benefit from four main features of the application that allow users to gather the following information: Client Information - Mutual clients they share with other human services departments and agencies Household Information – Information about clients living at the same address Referral Services Information – Referral and location information for services in Johnson, Wyandotte, and Jackson County. This includes identifying transportation and driving directions for clients and Human Services professionals making home visits.         • First time users will be asked to change your password

    • Caseworker Resource Center
      • Timing out and Search Capabilities
        • --You will have 120 minutes within the CRC before the system will time you out. You may hit the “refresh” button on your browser and this will restart the allotted 120 minutes but will clear any searches you have made.
        • --Within the client tab, the CRC will only display the first 100 records for security reasons. Within the services tab, the CRC will only display the first 1000 records for functionality reasons.

        • The % sign functions as a open-ended search

        • “ Category” drop down box = Broad groups of service type OR Specific referral guides
        • “ Description” drop down box = Specific types of service within the “Category”
      • Sample Searches
        • Sample #1: Category = Pregnancy Resources / Description = Adoption, Prenatal Care, Pregnancy Counseling
        • Sample #2: Category = Food / Description = Food Pantries, Formula/Baby Food, Congregate Meals/Nutrition Sites
        • Sample #3: Category = Material Goods / Description = Baby Clothing, Coats/Winter Clothing, Personal/Grooming Supplies
      How do I search the “Services Tab”
    • How do I search the “Services Tab”
      • After clicking on the services tab, you will be able to search organizations by either the services they provide or their name.
      • After clicking on the services button, there will be a drop down available for services—this is a combination of resources compiled by Johnson County departments as well as United Way 211 information. Once you have chosen a selection from the service drop down, a drop down with narrowed information will drop down with types of service in the adjacent box when selected. You can choose up to three types of service.
      • Example: A mother would like to find an organization that can help her with baby diapers, baby formula, and baby clothing. She can select all three items from the service types drop down box.
    • How do I search the “Services Tab”
      • You will also be able to choose “and/or” under the types of services. If an organization is needed to provide all the service types, you will select the “and” button. If an organization only needs to provide one of the services selected, you will select the “or” button.
      • If you would like to retain some of the information and search for more, be sure to check the box to the left of the organization—your selected agencies will be saved and you can search for more services.
      • Clicking the “Reset” button will clear all of your searches.
      • In order to map services, you can select them individually by clicking the box to the left of their name or you can select all. After selecting which records you would like to map, click the map button. This will take you directly to the map where the services’ locations will show up as red balloons. In order to see who is who, you can left click on the balloon and the organization’s name and address will appear on the far right of your screen. The CRC will also explain what services were not able to be mapped due to faulty addresses.
      • We will go into more detail about mapping in the Map Tab section.
      • Without opening up different services, you can hover over the fee section to get a full description of required fees. You can also go directly to an organization’s website from the initial grid of services.
      • You can open up a particular service to get extended information by clicking on the plus sign to the far left of the entry or clicking anywhere within the bar of the agency record. Once the organization has been opened, the categorization developed by UW 211 will be present in those entries and somewhat mimicked in the entries by Johnson County departments.
    • Map Tab
      • The map in the CRC is similar to Google maps. In order to pan you “grab” or left click and hold down while dragging the mouse in the directions you would like to pan. You can zoom in and out using the scroll on your mouse as well.
      • The default view is Map but your other options are--Satellite, Hybrid, or Terrain.
      • On any of the tabs within the Map tab, you can always add an address to the map. The address you add will show up as a yellow balloon to show user-added.
      • You can also show directions from the markers you add by clicking on directions (by car) or transit (by bus).
      • There are three tabs within the map titled: Layers, Tools, Legend.
        • The Layers tab will show client, services, and bus routes. You can select for any or all of these categories to show up at a time by clicking on the box directly to the left of each category.
        • The Tools tab has three tools: Measure, Buffer, and Add Marker
          • The Measure tool will show you how to measure the distance from one point to another. Click the “Measure” button and a location on the map. Then drag the red balloon that appears to the place you would like to measure.
      • The Buffer tool allows you to show services within a certain radius of miles. You can set the buffer for the radius you would like, then press the “Buffer” button, and then click a location on the map. The buffer will show you the distance you chose with a blue shaded circle. You can double click on the middle of the buffer to clear it from the map.
      • The third tool is the ability to add a marker. If you have a location not in the CRC, you can either add it yourself by clicking on the “Marker” button and then clicking on the spot you choose on the map. To find out the exact address of the marker you have added, click on the yellow balloon that will appear and the address will appear on the far right side of the screen.
        • The Legend tab will indicate which color of balloon is associated with what type of information. Blue-client, Red-service, Yellow-user added. You can also select to show how many client/services are located at the same address on the map.
      • Example: You may have multiple clients at an apartment complex. The balloon will be more defined and have a darker shadow. If you have selected for the CRC to show you how many clients are at this address, a small number will appear to show you how many clients are at that address.
        • How Olathe District Schools can partner with the Caseworker Resource Center
        • Provide listing resources, services, programs, etc. that are available within Olathe District Schools.

          • Educational tutoring/assistance
          • Extra curricula activities
          • Volunteer opportunities

          • Community Service
        • Utilize internal directories or referral documents.
        • Information will be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure information provided is accurate, reflect any changes in program/service, etc.
