RNchat Transcript October 13 2009 - Presentation Transcript
rnchat: Welcome everyone! Happy Tuesday. Let's start with introductions. Who are you in 140 or
less? :) #RNchat
10/13/2009 11:56
RoRod101: I'm searching for #RNchat live on TweetGrid Search - http://tweetgrid.com/search?
q=%23RNchat
10/13/2009 11:59
EllenRichter: I'm a critical care nurse for many (many) years & also provide consultation & assistance to
attorneys on medical litigation :) Hi! #RNchat
10/13/2009 11:59
philbaumann: @Emergiblog Come on over to #RNchat if you have time. Be happy to have you over. It's
not raining in here. Not yet. :)
10/13/2009 12:00
EllenRichter: Hi there Ro, Phil & pix! :) #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:00
rnchat: T1 Should Hospitals (& Other facilities) ban/block social media sites? What are
smart/appropriate 21st Century policies? #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:01
pixelrn: Hi all! Critical Care RN, lately a SAHM, sometimes a blogger. #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:01
RoRod101: Hi Everyone, My name is Rosita, But u can call me Ro. I am a RN, Nurse Educator, NP
& DNP student. Happy to be here! #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:02
EllenRichter: T1 Since sm is still relatively new, many hosp personnel not savvy about using it from
work. Many go to sm sites to socialize only #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:03
EllenRichter: T1 I feel that if hospitals. etc open sm sites to staff, it needs to be specified as healthcare
related content #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:05
RoRod101: T1 Currently, new to SM. And was against SM, because did not what it entailed. Once
ppl know the great uses they will be on board. #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:06
EllenRichter: T1 My facility has not ventured into sm yet & we are currently blocked from accessing sm
sites, prob cuz they feel it is a diversion #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:07
pixelrn: T1 They are pretty much going to be impossible to block - so many R using
iphones/bberries to access these sites while at work. #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:07
EllenRichter: @RoRod101 Yes, altho sm is not necessarily new its use in healthcare is still quite
virginal for most~but its growing in popularity! #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:09
rnchat: T1 Are there opportunity costs to banning? ie - what benefits might hospitals forgo by
banning (side reference http://bit.ly/Tw3sO ) #rnchat
10/13/2009 12:09
ocdgirl2000: #RNChat howdy, Lynne Siegel R.N. Community Health CHNII Mont Co Gov Methadone
Treatment MAT dispensing. Outpt addiction.
10/13/2009 12:11
EllenRichter: T1 The point is to create social media avenues to promote health care, not to socialize.
#RNchat
10/13/2009 12:13
pixelrn: @rnchat T1 Absolutely. These sites foster a sense of community which in turn can foster
nurse retention. #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:13
EllenRichter: Hi Lynne~ :) #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:14
EllenRichter: T1 I believe facilities ban sm sites at this point because they have no specified policies
yet & fear litigation from idle chatter #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:15
ocdgirl2000: #RNChat where we are, most are computer illiterate anyway..unfortunate, local gov
backwards, RN's are in la-la land.
10/13/2009 12:15
RoRod101: T1 I think once they discover how useful it is, they will come around. I am also new to
SM, approx a 2 mos. #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:15
pixelrn: @EllenRichter I don't think you can control socialization at work. Whether it's a convo in
the caf or an IM, or FB status update. #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:15
SafetyNurse: #RNchat Hi all. Late, sorry. Barbara Olson, patient & med safety consultant. Blogger,
advocate, nurse, and citizen. Tired.
10/13/2009 12:15
EllenRichter: @pixelrn Yes, staff retention is a great use for social media in health care! Wish we saw
more of that! #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:16
rnchat: RT @ocdgirl2000: #RNChat where we are, most are computer illiterate
anyway..unfortunate, local gov backwards, RNs are in la-la land. #rnchat
10/13/2009 12:16
ocdgirl2000: @EllenRichter hey Ellen! #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:16
EllenRichter: @pixelrn Yes I agree~we cant control personal cellphone access to sm but facilities can &
do block THEIR computer access to sm sites #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:17
ocdgirl2000: #RNChat as a whole, local gov tends to be scattered, run by NON-RN's not co-ordinated
in any central fashion. VERY unlike Healthcare!
10/13/2009 12:19
EllenRichter: Hi there Barb! :) #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:19
EllenRichter: T1 Once facilities see how sm efforts can increase profit & promote pt satisfactn, more
avenues will open for health care providers #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:20
ocdgirl2000: T1 #RNChat there R departments in our local gov that other RN's do not know
exist, where they can practice in fields that may be interesting!
10/13/2009 12:22
SafetyNurse: #RNchat I'm really trying to learn more about merits. Can certainly see downside (if texting
while driving is an indicator).
10/13/2009 12:22
ocdgirl2000: T1 #RNChat because there is no centralized way to communicate or coordinate efforts,
there is no way to retain RN's who might want to stay
10/13/2009 12:23
EllenRichter: T1 Merits? Imagine new 20 y/o insulin-diabetic @ home figuring out their sliding scale;
what if they DM U gluc results ea time? #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:26
cyclingwidow: @pixelrn but staff must remember HIPAA with sm just like if they were having a convo,
or moreso. We need to get that reminder out #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:27
ocdgirl2000: T1 #RNChat is not just about profits,it's about State & Local taxpayer's money! & time
wasted having 2 re-hire costing staff burnout,safety
10/13/2009 12:27
EllenRichter: T1 Social media for health care isnt abt texting while driving. SM sites can be set up
during business hours to be avail to patients #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:28
rnchat: T2 Clinical Applications - What are you favorite ones if you use them (iPhone, etc.) What's
would be your "wish-list"? #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:28
pixelrn: @cyclingwidow T1 Agree. But we use SM more to support one another than to talk about
pts. Which is a good thing. #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:29
SafetyNurse: #RNchat @EllenRichter Okay, I c focus now. Patient use. I was thinking about
bennies/issues for HC workers OTJ.
10/13/2009 12:30
ocdgirl2000: T1 #RNChat human resources aren't even RN's themelves, they have to jump through
hoops to hire, desks, desks, and more desks...inefficient!
10/13/2009 12:30
RoRod101: T2 My favorite is SkyScape. Currently, using BB storm. I really like the ability to access
info at the point of care (POC) #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:30
EllenRichter: @ocdgirl2000 Even govt agencies are now being represented on sm sites! white house,
CDC, FDA as ex. #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:31
cyclingwidow: @pixelrn absolutely. Just thinking of FB vids that I've seen recorded durinmg worong hrs
by staff, be careful what's in bkgrnd! :). #rnchat
10/13/2009 12:31
SafetyNurse: #RNchat T1 I Ellen's ex of a digital native diabetic learning without sm is great. My kids
can't go to grocery store w/out calling 2 clarify
10/13/2009 12:32
rnchat: @SafetyNurse It was for workers. Here's an example of what one hospital is doing -
http://bit.ly/Tw3sO #rnchat
10/13/2009 12:32
ocdgirl2000: @EllenRichter T1 #RNChat our local gov barely has any followers, only upper income fr
school system & county council,+ businesses..
10/13/2009 12:35
pixelrn: T2 We are so behind in this area. I'll be happy when I can chart, look up a med record,
see vital signs with a handheld. #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:35
SafetyNurse: #rnchat @rnchat Thanks. I agree with Paul. (Have him on my list of top 25 patient safety
tweeps for advancing this type of thinking.)
10/13/2009 12:36
SafetyNurse: #rnchat T1 Wonder about internal sm things (maybe Yammer?) for direct pt to clinician
communication. Anyone seeing that?
10/13/2009 12:38
EllenRichter: T2 @pixelrn I agree, we need improved electronic programs for patient-care
delivery~many are so antiquated #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:38
SafetyNurse: #rnchat T1 The thing that concerns me tho, is the distraction factor. Not a straight sm
concern but one that could add 2 chaos
10/13/2009 12:40
EllenRichter: @rnchat Yes, thanks for that great link to Paul's blog http://bit.ly/Tw3sO & @safetynurse I
agree he is a great healthcare tweep! #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:40
ocdgirl2000: T1 #RNChat even if it's to introduce oneself to other RN's in other dept's "hey we exist"
"come take a tour on your day off" communication!!
10/13/2009 12:41
EllenRichter: T1 Yes, distraction is a factor, as is privacy violation. We just need some solid policies to
guide health care professionals in sm #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:42
pixelrn: T2 I remember an RN in nsg school in 2004 showing me a handheld she charted with. It
looked like Merlin (anyone remember Merlin?) #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:42
pixelrn: T2 http://bit.ly/jedbf #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:43
EllenRichter: T2 I wish i used a great application at my facility! We have some generic pt ed programs
online to print from :( #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:43
rnchat: @SafetyNurse re: Yammer - some hospitals use Yammer but at admin level. But
enterprise micro-blogging clients could be useful imo. #rnchat
10/13/2009 12:43
rnchat: RT @pixelrn: T2 http://bit.ly/jedbf <+100 points :) #rnchat
10/13/2009 12:44
SafetyNurse: #rnchat T2 I was the first student in my class (mid-80's) to use a PC. Kaypro. Used it to
do careplans. (No one looked at them.) :-)
10/13/2009 12:44
EllenRichter: @pixelrn LOL omg, that looks like an antique :) @safetynurse I am not familiar with
Yammer #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:44
ocdgirl2000: T2 #RNChat oh, we have a great application specific for what we do, called clinicweb it's
dosing specific..
10/13/2009 12:46
EllenRichter: T2 I see other disciplines using iphones in practice, like pharmDs & nutritionists, using
programs to access data & info for pt care #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:47
SafetyNurse: @EllenRichter #RNchat It's like Twitter only runs inside firewall (not sure if that's the right
descriptor). Controls access , more secure.
10/13/2009 12:47
EllenRichter: T2 My colleagues in grad schl MUST meet on web-based sites to share info on articles &
to have group discussions: thats sm too #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:48
SafetyNurse: #rnchat T2 @safetynurse would love to see apps that allowed errors and near-misses to
be passed on rapidly. A twitpic is worth 1,000 words!
10/13/2009 12:48
RoRod101: T2 I am at multiple facilities with students, so I use my smartphone. #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:49
rnchat: @EllenRichter Yammer - http://bit.ly/FT7z3 - Basically Twitter but for Enterprise. More
features (more secure, etc.). #rnchat
10/13/2009 12:49
EllenRichter: T2 @safetynurse I guess its still considered a form of sm b/c you can all communicate
thoughts via typing. Its a start, right? :) #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:50
SafetyNurse: @EllenRichter #RNChat T2 Medscape a free download I use on my iPhone. (Disclosure
alert: I blog for them.) But the app stands on its own.
10/13/2009 12:50
RoRod101: @EllenRichter T2 My classmates & I set up a google group to share info and google
docs to work on group work. #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:51
pixelrn: T2 This will be a game changer: http://bit.ly/1hKhwA #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:51
EllenRichter: @SafetyNurse~and a great blog too, if I may say! #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:51
SafetyNurse: @EllenRichter #rnchat r u talking about Yammer or my old Kaypro? http://bit.ly/1AcQXA
10/13/2009 12:53
EllenRichter: T2 We are at the cusp of the sm explosion in health care. There is much more that will
evolve in the coming years. I cant wait. :) #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:53
EllenRichter: @safetynurse T2 Was referring to Yammer #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:54
SafetyNurse: @pixelrn #rnchat T2 Yes. Now we just need to see nursing care be devoted to assessing
& responding to this data. Not recopying it! #fail
10/13/2009 12:54
RoRod101: RT @EllenRichter T2 We R at the cusp of the sm explosion in health care. There is much
more that will evolve in the coming years. #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:55
pixelrn: @EllenRichter T2 Agree! It is a very cool time to be a nurse and see all of this
materialize. #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:55
ocdgirl2000: T2 #rnchat ginx has some RN groups as well..I think? not sue if they are still there?
10/13/2009 12:56
EllenRichter: @pixelrn Thats like the next generation telemetry! That GE wireless vital sign system
would be great! :) #RNchat
10/13/2009 12:57
EllenRichter: RT @SafetyNurse: #rnchat You hit the nail on the head. I think visible enthusiasm from
nurses will help drive innovation and "make it work"
10/13/2009 12:58
SafetyNurse: @EllenRichter #rnchat You hit the nail on the head. I think visible enthusiasm from RNs
will help drive innovation & "make it work" 4 nurses
10/13/2009 12:59
pixelrn: @SafetyNurse T2 Yes! For now we use a 1990's arrhythmia beeper that I spend more
time fiddling with than actually responding to pts. #RNChat
10/13/2009 12:59
rnchat: OK, we're wrapping up. I really appreciate all of your participation. It's always such an
intelligent & fun time. #rnchat
10/13/2009 12:59
SafetyNurse: @ocdgirl2000 #RNChat- What's ginx?

rnchat: Feel free to keep going on if you feel like. #rnchat
10/13/2009 13:00
EllenRichter: T2 @SafetyNurse Yes we need to pull those RNs who are in la-la land out of the
darkness & familiarize them with the benefits of sm #RNchat
