  • 4. 4The title tag is one of theoldest attributes there is to awebpage’s layout. Title Tagshave been existent sincewebsites came to being. Titletags are also one of the mostimportant attributes that youwill ever get to use in your on site optimization. As a user, you see the title tag in the top-leftmostpart of your internet browser. It is also used in the search engine results page asindicated in the illustration:Title Tag
  • 5. 5It doesn’t take a genius to create a title tag. You canalways see how title tags are created in the sourcecode of an internet browser. For example, if you’reusing Firefox, type inCTR+U and you’ll see thesource code of this page.Press CTR+F and look for<title>I would say title tags havea very valuable usage bothfor people and for searchengines. It holds really good weight as an on-siteoptimization factor – giving you a good foundationfor your desired keyword. It also lets users knowwhat your page is all about in the search engines andin your website itself.Don’t take the title tag for granted. But don’t stuff intoo much of your keywords in it too.
  • 6. 6The title tag is good for 70 characters. Any more thanthat and the search engines will show an ellipsis (…)to indicate that the excess characters in the title taghave not been included anymore. It is also advised thatthe keywords in thetitle tag should befound in the body ofthe content for ahigher rank. It wouldbe great if your titletag is also an on-pageH1 title tag. Forexample: This article’s H1 title is the same as thepage’s title tag.
  • 7. 7Another good strategy for thetitle tag is that you should placethe keywords that you want torank for in front – put it as thefirst words of your 70 charactertitle tag – this way, they wouldbe more helpful for ranking and they would havebetter impact on a user as a relevant result.
  • 8. 8You can optimize your title tags for branding as well.If you check http://seo-hacker.org, my title tag is“Learn SEO | SEO Hacker School” because that’s whatthe site is all about.SEO School is all about making surethat the SEO that you’re learningreally works. I don’t get technicalwith the lessons, but if and when I do,I explicitly outline every step andevery shortcut to it.Putting your brand in the title tag leverages yourbrand both in the SERPs and in your website. Andthat’s a good thing.
  • 9. 9A great title is what it is – GREAT. It should attractpeople to click the moment that they see it in theSearch Engine Results Page (SERP). It should compelthem to read what your article is all about. It shouldlure them in.People don’t read yourarticle’s body unless theylike your title. Statistics saythat you have 2 seconds forpeople to shrug off whatyou have to say because youdid not intrigue them withyour title.
  • 10. 10People are emotional beings.Whether they are male orfemale, their decision makingabilities are impacted by theiremotional pull. You have tocapitalize on that and makeyour title alluring to what tugspeople emotionally. The title tag is the first thing people will see in theSERP about your website/webpage. Make it good sothat you will have a positive first impression.Tips for Keeps: Stick to the basic rules here abouttitle tags and a big chunk of your On Site optimizationwould have already been solved.
  • 11. 118 Actionable On SiteOptimization Techniques1 Title TagArguably the most Important On Site factor there is2 Keyword DensityKeywords are vital to your site’s SEO3 Keyword Prominence & ProximityWhere you place your Keywords and how you arrange them4 Outbound LinksYou’ve got a link here and a link there5 Image SEOHiding keywords inside every picture6 SitemapMaking it easy for Search Spiders to Crawl your stuff7 URL SlugsThat URL is very, very important8 Internal LinkingAll the relevant stuff go togetherOn siteoptimizationaccounts foraroundtwenty fivepercent (25%)of your entireSEO factor. This is asimplified,Complete OnSiteOptimizationTutorial foranyone who isnew to SEOand wants toknow how tomake themost out oftheir on siteoptimization
  • 12. 12Keywords are vital to your site’s SEO. They are thecornerstone of your entire SEO campaign. Withoutthe right keywords, your SEO structure has nofoundation and will get you nowhere.Understanding keyworddensity is one step toleveraging yourwebsite’s on-siteoptimization.
  • 13. 13Keyword densityDeals with the ratio of your keywords in light of thetotal number of index-able words placed in yourwebpage. For example, you have 100 words article, then havinga 1% keyword ratio means that you should have thepresence of your keyword one time within that 100word text.
  • 14. 14Being mindful of your keyword density can give asignal to the search engines that your article is allabout a certain specific topic – which is the keywordyou are targeting. Having this signal gives yourwebpage relevance and good keyword presence.Don’t mistake this withkeyword stuffing.Keyword stuffing issqueezing in as much ofyour desired keyword asyou can inside your articlewithout much/any regardto your readers. Keyword stuffing is plain wrong andis a spammy method that won’t get you up in theranks anyway. Don’t believe me? Check this out.
  • 15. 15The recommended keyword density is not the samefor all search engines. For example, Google’s recommended keyworddensity ranges from 1-2%(pictures taken fromgorank.com)
  • 16. 16While Yahoo’s recommended keyword density is at3%.
  • 17. 17In general, I would recommend that you stick to 2%.Is keyword density still used in SEO today? Yes I’msure it is. It still has an effect towards search enginesto some extent. But if you ask me if people still count their keyworddensity, I would say no.Why?Because people don’t usually write for search engines– unless he/she is a black hatter or a spammer tryingto get up the ranks quick.Tips for Keeps: You don’t need to really count if youhave a 2% ratio in order to rank well. Just try to bemindful to insert your keywords when necessary.Don’t overdo it. Write for people because in the end,it’s people who will be reading what you have to say.
  • 18. 188 Actionable On SiteOptimization Techniques1 Title TagArguably the most Important On Site factor there is2 Keyword DensityKeywords are vital to your site’s SEO3 Keyword Prominence & ProximityWhere you place your Keywords and how you arrange them4 Outbound LinksYou’ve got a link here and a link there5 Image SEOHiding keywords inside every picture6 SitemapMaking it easy for Search Spiders to Crawl your stuff7 URL SlugsThat URL is very, very important8 Internal LinkingAll the relevant stuff go togetherOn siteoptimizationaccounts foraroundtwenty fivepercent (25%)of your entireSEO factor. This is asimplified,Complete OnSiteOptimizationTutorial foranyone who isnew to SEOand wants toknow how tomake themost out oftheir on siteoptimization
  • 19. 19Now that we’ve discussed keyword density, it’s timeyou know the other factors when it comes tokeywords in your on-site optimization. Understandingkeyword prominence, frequency and proximity canhelp you leverage the power and placing of yourkeywords in your website. This is a tutorial forKeyword Prominence,Frequency and Proximity. Keywords are what makesyour site tick. It is thebread and butter that yourreaders are going to biteand chew. Knowing where to place them, how to usethem and how often to insert them in a sentence isimportant.
  • 20. 20Keyword Prominence deals with how eye-catchingyour keywords are within a web page. The importantkeywords should be the most prominent in yourwebpage. For example:Do you see that the keyphraseI’m trying to target? “Your sexdrive is not the problem”, isvery prominent in the page asit is my article’s title. It is at a good place in mywebpage with good fonts andheight. That spells out prominence.
  • 21. 21Keyword frequency deals with the number of timesyou let your keyword or keyphrase appear in awebpage. It is said that the more times akeyword appears in yourwebpage, the more relevance asearch engine will likely attributeto it whenever a user wouldsearch for those keywords.Again, there is a fine linebetween keyword stuffing and having good keywordfrequency.Watch how many times you repeat those keywordsand make sure that your article makes sense. In fact, Iwould advise you to just be mindful of your keyword
  • 22. 22frequency - don’t force it or put too much emphasison it.
  • 23. 23Keyword proximity deals with the closeness betweentwo or more keywords with each other. The idea is the closer the keywords are to each other, the better.Let me give you an example:“How your on site optimization willaffect your search enginerankings”“How your on site optimization willaffect your rankings in searchengines”
  • 24. 24There ain’t much difference, is there? But if someonesearches “Search engine rankings” it is more likelythat the previous title will rank higher than the latter. This scenario is within the context and assumptionthat all else is equal for both pages. It ain’t a huge factor, but knowing these little thingsmatter.Tips for Keeps: Create great, quality, compellingcontent – that is of first importance. Just be mindfulof these three things about your keyword. It’s goodawareness but don’t make it the basis for your nextarticle.
  • 25. 258 Actionable On SiteOptimization Techniques1 Title TagArguably the most Important On Site factor there is2 Keyword DensityKeywords are vital to your site’s SEO3 Keyword Prominence & ProximityWhere you place your Keywords and how you arrange them4 Outbound LinksYou’ve got a link here and a link there5 Image SEOHiding keywords inside every picture6 SitemapMaking it easy for Search Spiders to Crawl your stuff7 URL SlugsThat URL is very, very important8 Internal LinkingAll the relevant stuff go togetherOn siteoptimizationaccounts foraroundtwenty fivepercent (25%)of your entireSEO factor. This is asimplified,Complete OnSiteOptimizationTutorial foranyone who isnew to SEOand wants toknow how tomake themost out oftheir on siteoptimization
  • 26. 26You’ve got a link here and a link there. The internet isfull of links. Each time you click a link, chances are, itmeans you’re traveling from a certain webpage toanother. In SEO, understanding the outbound link isone step forward for your on-site optimization. I’llalso be talkingabout hiddenkeywords in yourlinks below.Outbound links are links that are meant to take youelsewhere. These are links that are going to directyou to another specific webpage or websitealtogether. Most, if not all, websites have outboundlinks.
  • 27. 27There are two (2) kinds of outbound links. There isthe nofollow link and the dofollow link. The dofollow link is the normal link. It is the defaultlink. The common link. The normal link. You don’thave to add to the code, you don’t have to changeanything. Just make a link and it’sautomatically a dofollow link. Adofollow link is what every link shouldbe like. It passes on Google PageRankjuice from your webpage to thetargeted webpage.A nofollow link is the “abnormal link”.It does not pass on any GooglePageRank juice to the targetedwebpage but instead, it blocks off theGoogle PageRank flow.
  • 28. 28A nofollow link has a rel=”nofollow” tag inside thecode. This tag says to the Google spider: “do notfollow this link”.Why do you add a nofollow tag to a link?Adding a nofollow tag stops thesearch spider from crawling thattargeted webpage. Most webmastersdo this when they do not want to giveout Google PageRank juice to thetargeted webpage. For example, I need to link toFacebook to advertise my Facebook page. SinceFacebook already has millions of incoming links to itand my link towards Facebook would make minimaldifference, I decide not to give it any PageRank juiceso that I can keep some for myself. So I add thenofollow tag to my link which makes it look like this:<a href=”http://www.facebook.com/SEOHacker”rel=”nofollow”> Join the SEO Hacker FacebookPage</a>
  • 29. 29That’s the only reason why I put in nofollow tags.Otherwise, if I want to cite out a specific source ofrelevant information, I give out dofollow linksbecause:1.It is only right to do so2.It makes Google recognize you as a hub of thatspecific resource – which makes you rank higherin the long run3.The webmaster of the target webpage mightrecognize you and perhaps link back to youDon’t use nofollow tag for every outbound linkbecause nofollow tags still deduct some GooglePageRank juice from your webpageeven if it gives none to yourtargeted webpage. It’s a lose-losescenario. Play fair.Give out dofollows if the targetwebpage deserves it.
  • 30. 30An anchor text is used to describe a link. In fact, it isnearly the only description of your link that users willsee. These are the clickable, underlined textshighlighted in blue (in most cases). Anchor texts areused to describe a link – which means that it is alsoused as keywords of thattargeted webpage.A good anchor text fromanother webpage is importantto support your keywords. Alink with the right anchor textcould greatly boost the search engine’s awareness ofyour webpage’s keywords. If ever you would have thechance to get a link from another blogger, keep inmind that the anchor text he/she will give you canhelp your webpage/site to rank higher with yourtarget keywords if you let him/her use it as theanchor text.
  • 31. 31The Anchor Title attribute of a link is one of theneglected attributes. It is an attribute that can holdyour keyword inside but more importantly, it is anattribute that helps people know more about thetarget webpage you’re pointing out to.Not many people give notice to the title attributesince it is not practiced by many. But that’s exactlywhy you should keep your title attributes up to date –because it’s an edge you can use.
  • 32. 32The code for the title attribute is title=”insert titlehere”For example:<a href=”http://seo-hacker.com” title=”SEO forbeginners”> Learn SEO in simple terms</a>Tips for Keeps: Be mindful of your outbound links. Addthe nofollow attribute when necessary. Otherwise, givesome link love. Take the time to write out a goodanchor text and anchor title for other people’s benefit. You’ll never know who might return the favor.
  • 33. 338 Actionable On SiteOptimization Techniques1 Title TagArguably the most Important On Site factor there is2 Keyword DensityKeywords are vital to your site’s SEO3 Keyword Prominence & ProximityWhere you place your Keywords and how you arrange them4 Outbound LinksYou’ve got a link here and a link there5 Image SEOHiding keywords inside every picture6 SitemapMaking it easy for Search Spiders to Crawl your stuff7 URL SlugsThat URL is very, very important8 Internal LinkingAll the relevant stuff go togetherOn siteoptimizationaccounts foraroundtwenty fivepercent (25%)of your entireSEO factor. This is asimplified,Complete OnSiteOptimizationTutorial foranyone who isnew to SEOand wants toknow how tomake themost out oftheir on siteoptimization
  • 34. 34Now that we have established outbound links, here’sone more that could help you with your on siteoptimization – Image SEO. How do you dooptimization for images? How do you use image alt text? How do you useimage title? Does changing an image filename help?
  • 35. 35A Good AlternativeImage alt text stands for ‘image alternate text’ – whyis it called alternatetext? Because when youload a webpage withoutdisplay turned on, it’sthe alternate text thatwill display instead of the image.Image alt text can also be considered the keywordsbehind the image. But it is well-nigh misunderstoodand misused. People and ‘SEO specialists’ (or so theyclaim) alike, use image alt text to stuff and spamkeywords inside their images – thinking that theseinvisible keywords will improve their relevance rating.
  • 36. 36This practice is clearly wrong. It may work at times, yes, but it is not the original design and purpose ofthe image ‘alt text’ attribute. The image alt text is supposed to describe what theimage is about so that when you search in the ImageSERP (Image Search Engine Results Page) of varioussearch engines, your picture is ranking well forcertain keywords. The best ‘Img Alt text’ are relevantkeywords pertaining to that image which you taggedwith an alt text.
  • 37. 37When you look at the image HTML code, it lookssomething like this:<img src =”http://sample-image-url.com” alt=”this iswhere you put the alt text”/>It’s not rocket science at all. AndI highly recommend putting inalt texts in all your images. It might not help much inranking for the main Web SERPbut it will surely help you inranking for the image SERP.
  • 38. 38Image alt text is not the only available attributewhere you can hide keywords. There is also an imagetitle attribute. The image title attribute does notweigh as heavily as image alt text in ranking yourimages in the image SERP but it does help. How?It helps people. When a user/reader/customermouses-over an image thathe/she perhaps do notunderstand, an image title willhelp the person know what youare trying to say with that imageby showing a tool-tip-text.
  • 39. 39Again, an image title is not meant for you to stuff upkeywords inside your image. Instead, it is meant foryou to help people understand why you put theimage there, what’s it for and what it says. The way itaffects search engines should not be made a focuseven if it may affect your image rankings a bit.How do you use image title? When you look at the image HTML code, it lookssomething like this:<img src=”http://sample-url-here.com” alt =”samplealt text here” title=”sample title text here”/>
  • 40. 40Does the image filename matter? This is a question that has bothered a lot of SEOspecialists. Does the filename of the image itselfaffect therankings ofthe image inthe SERP?I could onlysay my personal opinion and observation. And thusfar, I am driven to say yes.An image filename does affect the ranking of theimage in the SERP. That is why all the images I use inSEO-Hacker.com does not come from an externalsource – because even if I can edit the alternate textand title when it comes from an external source, Icannot edit the image file name unless I downloadand save it with my desired image file name.
  • 41. 41I would advise that before you upload any image, change the filename first into the best descriptionpossible for that certain, specific image that youhave. We want to rank. And we want to make everypossible factor count in order for us to get to the top.Tips for keeps: Take heed of these three simpledetails for optimizing images. All the little things inSEO matter. Optimizing images is one arena that youwill compete in whether you like it or not. Sinceyou’re already in the competition, make it good. Asgood as you can make it to be.
  • 42. 428 Actionable On SiteOptimization Techniques1 Title TagArguably the most Important On Site factor there is2 Keyword D qqensityKeywords are vital to your site’s SEO3 Keyword Prominence & ProximityWhere you place your Keywords and how you arrange them4 Outbound LinksYou’ve got a link here and a link there5 Image SEOHiding keywords inside every picture6 SitemapMaking it easy for Search Spiders to Crawl your stuff7URL SlugsThat URL is very, very important8Internal LinkingAll the relevant stuff go togetherOn siteoptimizationaccounts foraroundtwenty fivepercent (25%)of your entireSEO factor. This is asimplified,Complete OnSiteOptimizationTutorial foranyone who isnew to SEOand wants toknow how tomake themost out oftheir on siteoptimization
  • 43. 43Now that we’ve covered how you can optimizeimages in your website, let’s move on tounderstanding Sitemaps and its effects to your on siteSEO structure. What is a Sitemap? In simple terms, a Sitemap isan XML file that is full of yourindividual webpage’s URLs.It’s like an archive of everywebpage in your website. This file should be easilydiscoverable in your site inorder for search enginecrawlers to stumble upon it.
  • 44. 44A Sitemap is usually used for the purpose of lettingthe search engine crawlers follow the links to all yourindividual webpages so that it won’t miss out onanything.Sometimes we leave out URLs or hide them from allvisible pages because we don’t exactly want some ofthe users to go there. As a result, some of these URLsare uncrawlable to search engine spiders. We can still leave those URLs hidden from some userswithout having to lose out on those pages not beingcrawled by search engine spiders through includingthem in an XML Sitemap.Click here to check out whatan XML Sitemap looks like
  • 45. 45A Sitemap is pretty easy to create. For WordPressusers, you can download the Google XML Sitemapsplugin to make it easier for you. This plugin helps yougenerate an XML sitemap without having to doanything but activating it.After the plugin has generated your Sitemap, you canfind the Sitemap at an address like this:For those who are not using WordPress, you can usethis Google Sitemap Generator Plugin . It’s prettyeasy and they provide a step-by-step approach foryou to implement your own Sitemap in your website.
  • 46. 46Search engines should see all the pages that you wantthem to see. The more pages that they index fromyou, the more trust your site gains. It only means thatyour website has more information to offer.Making sure the search engine spiders get to crawl allthe stuff they need to crawl from your website is theexact purpose of a Sitemap. It’s not for navigation,it’s not for internal linking - it’s for the search enginespiders. It won’t magically boost your on-site SEO, but itwould definitely help.Tips for Keeps: Get your own Sitemap if you don’talready have one. It’s easy and it’s necessary.
  • 47. 478 Actionable On SiteOptimization Techniques1 Title TagArguably the most Important On Site factor there is2 Keyword DensityKeywords are vital to your site’s SEO3 Keyword Prominence & ProximityWhere you place your Keywords and how you arrange them4 Outbound LinksYou’ve got a link here and a link there5 Image SEOHiding keywords inside every picture6 SitemapMaking it easy for Search Spiders to Crawl your stuff7 URL SlugsThat URL is very, very important8Internal LinkingAll the relevant stuff go togetherOn siteoptimizationaccounts foraroundtwenty fivepercent (25%)of your entireSEO factor. This is asimplified,Complete OnSiteOptimizationTutorial foranyone who isnew to SEOand wants toknow how tomake themost out oftheir on siteoptimization
  • 48. 48URL slugs are the exactaddress of a specificwebsite. It is the locationwhere webpages areaccessed when typing theirURL in the address bar.Optimizing URL slugs is nota very hard thing to do.But if you ask me, it is one of the most importantthings you can do in your on site optimizationprocess.
  • 49. 49If you didn’t know, the URL slugs that you use in yourwebpage will appear in the SERPs. This is visible to allpeople who are searching in the web. For thisexample, I have searched for the keyphrase ‘Title TagOptimization’. The URL slug in the picture says “/title-tag-optimization-guide/” which is good. People whosee this result would say ‘Bingo’.But what if my URL slug says “/how-to-properly-give-your-dog-a-name/” then it starts to confusesearchers. It just doesn’t add up.
  • 50. 50Some people just don’t get it. Sometimes they writeout their URL slugs to be like this:http://www.example.com/10395embislgm-potllz1.phpIt’s just gibberish – both for people and consequentlyfor search engines too – because search engines arejust mimicking as to how people respond to searchquery results.
  • 51. 51Tip 1: Write your URL for peopleURL Slugs are Important for IndexingSearch engine indexing is the first and vital step in asearch engine’s three main functions. A search enginespider crawls every pageof a website and storeseach page’s data in itsdatabase. A webpage’sURL is always included inthe indexing stage toidentify all the attributesof a webpage. Just try acrawling tool like Xenu(download Xenu here) or Screaming Frog and you’llbe more familiar with what I’m talking about. If the URL of each page is indexed by the searchengines, then it would be safe to assume that thesearch engines give attention to the URL slugs: whichtakes us to the next step of a URL slug’s importance.
  • 52. 52Tip 2: Write your URL for the Search EnginesURL Slugs are Important for RankingThe last step in a search engine’s three mainfunctions is ranking its results. And since a URL slug isincluded in its indexing data, it is most safe to saythat a search engine factors in the URL slugs as itranks the webpage for a certain specifickeyword/keyphrase.A URL slug actually does affect ranking as I’ve tried itout in an experiment. I put in ‘Linkbuilding tutorial’on the URL slugs but I put in ‘Linkbuilding Strategies’on the Title of the entry and its Title tag. Guess what? The entry ranked for both keyphrases in its owncorresponding area of competition. My point is, the URL slugs aregiven importance by the searchengines in vital stages in its three-step process which is indexing, retrieval and ranking.
  • 53. 53Tip 3: Write your URL to Rank on yourKeywords/KeyphrasesAll in all, I just want you to be mindful ofyour URL slugs. It could really be one ofthe reasons why you’re ranking a bithigher than your competition.
  • 54. 548 Actionable On SiteOptimization Techniques1 Title TagArguably the most Important On Site factor there is2 Keyword DensityKeywords are vital to your site’s SEO3 Keyword Prominence & ProximityWhere you place your Keywords and how you arrange them4 Outbound LinksYou’ve got a link here and a link there5 Image SEOHiding keywords inside every picture6 SitemapMaking it easy for Search Spiders to Crawl your stuff7 URL SlugsThat URL is very, very important8 Internal LinkingAll the relevant stuff go togetherOn siteoptimizationaccounts foraroundtwenty fivepercent (25%)of your entireSEO factor. This is asimplified,Complete OnSiteOptimizationTutorial foranyone who isnew to SEOand wants toknow how tomake themost out oftheir on siteoptimization
  • 55. 55Internal linking is all about getting your webpagesinterconnected with each other. The World WideWeb is made up of links – you navigate fromwebpage to webpage through links. Yourecommend another webpage through links. But internal linking is more than just about navigationand recommendation.
  • 56. 56Internal linking (or interlinking as I’d like to call it forshort) is one method that SEO specialists use todistribute good, relevantPagerank to each webpagethat are related to eachother’s content. Interlinkingyour webpages inside yourwebsite does not only helppeople find relevant contentin the webpage they arereading, it also helps searchengine spiders have an easier time crawling yourwebsite and seeing the relevance with each page.Take this for example: You go to a comic store whichhas lots of other branches. You’re looking for theUltimate Spiderman series – but they told you thatthey only have volume 1 in this store and the other
  • 57. 57volumes are in the other store branches which youhave to find out for yourself. Ain’t that a bummer? Why do you have to go to all the other storebranches just to find the other volumes when theytechnically own all of those volumes anyway? Andwhy can’t they direct you to the other stores insteadof you having to look for it yourself?A website with good, interlinked webpages makes iteasier for its users to find out good, relevantinformation within itself. It also helps the searchengines to crawl it with a better ‘big picture’ of whatyour website is all about and how it is structured andrelated with each other.
  • 58. 58Inbound links are a great way to rank better. We allknow that. The more backlinks/inbound links youhave, the more Pagerank juice you have flowinginside your website. But you have to take note thatlinks will be links whether it is inbound or it isinternal. The beauty of interlinking is thatyou have full control of youranchor text and anchor title. These will help the searchengines better know what acertain webpage you have is allabout. Having the best anchor text and title assignedto a link is very valuable – even when the link comesfrom another webpage within the website.Interlinking can be a bit of a hassle since it falls underthe bracket of ‘nitty gritty details you have to fix
  • 59. 59before publishing’ but there are plugins you can usefor that such as SEO Smart Links. This will automateyour interlinking as you indicate it in the plugin’sdatabase.Tips for Keeps: Just be mindful of all your entries andwebpages as you publish a new one and if anyrelevant, older ones come to mind, link to it.Interlinking isn’t hard – it’s can just get tedious as youincrease your webpages. But that isn’t a bad thing.
