    2d Bar Codes are not new.. They have been in existence for many years, but the barriers to mainstream use are now starting to be overcome.

    Market is firmly backing the QR Code, as it is an open format code, with significant resource backing from Google and the Open Source developer community.

    NUMBER ONE (Pepsi UK)
    Britvic and PepsiCo unveiled a major sales promotion campaign incorporating QR Codes as a customer major channel. Over 400 million Pepsi Max bottles and cans carried a QR Code on it for the first time. These codes offer the mobile user, instant access to games, videos, websites, prizes and other entertainment at the swipe of a phone.
    Ahmed Abdel-Karim, marketing manager for Pepsi UK, said: "Pepsi is using QR codes to connect with, and engage, consumers in a new and exciting way wherever they are."
  • RECENT BEST PRACTICES:
    NUMBER TWO (Google)
    Google in the US recently distributed over 100,000 QR code stickers (decals) in the windows of local businesses nationwide. Each window decal carried a unique QR code that you can scan with your mobile to take you directly to that business's Google Place Page.
    Google has also just release a QR Code generator function to their URL shortening service goo.gl and promote the use of QR Codes for Android app downloads.

    NUMBER THREE (28 WEEKS LATER)
    One of the first big promotions to run in the UK is for the DVD release of sci-fi horror flick 28 Weeks Later, with a giant billboard featuring nothing but a giant QR Code containing a link to the film’s website.
    The giant QR Code appeared in the Shoreditch area of London and generated an enormous amount of media and public interest.

    NUMBER FOUR (DIRECT MAIL – TNT POST)
    TNT Post trialled the use of QR Codes within their Direct Mail and promoted their use to the wider marketing community with a significant marketing campaign.
    Metrics for the campaign are due to be announced soon, but are predicted to be extremely encouraging for the QR Code market.
