What is Nurse Call Software?  Actual heart of a PC-based nurse call system  Provides added functionality or interfaces for non PC-based nurse call systems.        Pocket Paging Interface Wireless Phone/PDA interface Management Reporting On-screen display of call information Event to device assignments Messaging Email interface

Nurse Call Software Listings (UL/CSA/NFPA…) Except for PC-based nurse call systems:  The software is not listed to the UL1069 or similar CSA listing of the nurse call system itself.  The software is not required for the nurse call system to operate and is only considered ancillary equipment.

Types of Software  Stand-alone – resides on a single PC only  Client/Server-based – a central server is used and client software must be installed and/or registered on networked PC’s that connect to the server  Browser-based – a web-type browser server resides on the network and networked PC’s can access the server from virtually any webbrowser. (no additional software needs to be installed on remote PC’s)

Nurse Call Software Uses MESSAGING INTERFACES    The software allows nurse call events to be sent as text messages to wireless pocket pagers, phones, PDA’s etc. The software may also allow nurse call events to be sent as text messages to outside Email The software reads alarm information from alarm systems (such as a nurse call or fire alarm system) and relays alarm messages as text messages.

Nurse Call Software Uses ASSIGNMENTS  The software can be used for staff to assign nurse call events to wireless devices  Assignments can be:    Static – assigned once and never changed Dynamic – needing staff to log-in to make changes to which calls they will receive that day Scheduled – changed automatically by time of day
  7. 7. Nurse Call Software Uses TEXT MESSAGING  The software can be used by staff to send manually entered text messages to staff pagers, phones, etc.. This operates similarly to Microsoft’s Messenger service.
  8. 8. Nurse Call Software Uses ON-SCREEN DISPLAY   The software can be used to enhance a nurse call console and display additional information on a PC screen that might not usually fit onto a standard nurse console. The console should always displays calls however.

Nurse Call Software Uses MANAGEMENT REPORTING  The software allows authorized staff to review event and staff response history  The software allows authorized staff to print and/or sort history reports or graphs  These are often stand-alone or Client/Server based & can rarely be done over a webserver
  10. 10. Types of Software (Stand-Alone)  Offer very limited functionality and can only be accessed from a single location  Usually require multiple copies of the same applications installed
  11. 11. Types of Software (Client/Server-Based)  Are usually provided by the nurse call vendor  Usually run on a stand-alone network that is often not supported by the IT dept. May run on a hospitals’ network but often need IT to closely scrutinize/test the software  Most products require expensive licensing of every client that needs to connect making it very expensive  Need software installed on all PC’s

Types of Software (Web Browser-Based)  Is operating system independent, runs on any PC that has a compatible web browser and network connection.  Are easy to deploy & maintain, as only a single server needs to be maintained  No software needs to be installed on networked PC’s for browser-based applications to work.  Greatly benefits from using the hospital LAN
