  • Hello, my name is Andy Lange (introductions, thanks for coming). Today, I’ll discuss seven simple social media strategies for business, and how effective they are in creating a strong business presence. Since we are limited on time, I will not be able to go into detail on how to create social media profiles, however, I am available for questions after the session, and as always, you can reach me anytime. I will provide my contact information after the session.
  • The answer is a profound YES! Much like the receptionist of yesterday, and even the website of 10 years ago, social media is fast becoming a company’s first impression, only today, instead of reaching 100s or even 1,000s, now you can potentially reach MILLIONS!
  • The answer is simpler than you think. Everyone’s heard of Facebook and Twitter, but most companies don’t maximize these sites to their full advantage. The following are 10 simple tips to increase your presence in social media, ultimately leading to increased visibility and business.
  • Many businesses are beginning to adopt the Facebook “fan page,” a page where you have the power to brand your company, your identity, your products, and of course, your personality. Think of Facebook as your website 2.0 – a place where not only you can quickly make announcements about your business – a new product, a new hire, an anniversary, a company party, but also receive often instant feedback from your “fans.” Think of this page not only as a way to promote your business, but to receive VALUABLE information in return – for free!!
  • Twitter has actually been around for a while now, but it’s only been recently that businesses are embracing this social media site as a very effective mode of communication. Limited to just 140 characters, this is a good method of spreading relevant company information in a fast manner that could potentially reach millions.
  • How many of you are on LinkedIn? This is an excellent social media site for promoting yourself and others in your company. Establishing yourselves as the “experts” in your field automatically lends credibility to not only to you personally, but also the company your with. And it’s much more than that. This is a great site to maximize your relationship-building capacity, building a network of professionals that are interested in what you do, therefore expanding business development opportunities and potential for both individual and company growth.
  • What have you found? Hopefully A LOT of positive mentions. If you’re not showing up in Google, the first step is to develop a Google Profile. Google Profiles is a lot like LinkedIn, but potentially reaches millions more people because it’s attached to the largest and fastest search engine in the world. When you set up a Google Profile, be sure to list your other social networks, too, as well as your company website. What this does is increase your individual and company Search Engine Optimization (SEO), which means when someone does a search on you or your company, you are more likely to be listed at the top of that particular search.
  • What does this mean? It means when you post a photo or video, whether it’s on LinkedIn, Flickr, Google Profiles or any other social media site, BE SURE TO LABEL the photo. In the social media world, this is referred to as “meta tags.” Meta tags are simply text labels associated with any photo or video, and the MORE descriptive you are, the better the chances people will find your information. For example, if you were posting a photo of a menu item from your restaurant, you would want it to include the name of your restaurant, and the name of the menu item. Always include a powerful descriptive word, too, like “Come enjoy Sacramento’s Little Italian Lobster Ravioli – it’s the BEST around!” When people search “Sacramento, Italian, Best food,” what they get is not only a description of your restaurant, but a photo, too.
  • So, I’m sure you’re thinking, “But Andy, how do I keep track of what everyone is saying about me? How do I know if I’m appearing in that Google search?” Simple! Once again, Google makes it easy for us social media gurus by providing us with the ability to monitor what people are saying about us, about our company, and sometimes just as important, our competitors. It’s easy to sign-up, and Google Alerts gives you the ability to custom-tailor searches most relevant to you and your company. You can sign-up to receive emails or RSS feeds, your choice, as well as decide how often you want to receive these notifications. It’s a fast, easy and free way to gain valuable insight on what people are saying about you and your company, as well as gather information on potential competitors and other news that might affect your industry.
  • Many of you are already involved in one or two, or maybe all of these social media sites. And that’s GREAT! You’ve taken that giant leap out of the box, and that’s a good thing, considering no box is big enough to contain the power of social media. And although social media is relatively in its infancy stages, I contend we are now at an age where the “traditional” social media – casual Facebook and Twitter use, an update a year on LinkedIn, uploading a photo or video here and there – has shattered. More and more savvy individuals and businesses are relying heavily on not just one social media site, but ALL. Why? Because these smart people are aware of the power of social media. So, how do you integrate all of your social media to where it compliments and grows you and your business? By making sure you connect with as many people as possible, on as many social media sites as possible. ALWAYS remember to link your sites on ANYTHING your customers or stakeholders see – marketing collateral, websites, press releases, YouTube channels, email blasts – ANYTHING, and I can’t stress that enough. Not only are you giving interested parties a choice in how they receive your information, but once again, you please the SEO wizards that live and breath in the virtual world. And the more you post, the more those wizards will remember you, waving their magic wands and increasing your visibility on web searches. Content IS king, and there is no better way to offer it than through social media.
  • Closing remarks, questions, thank you for coming…
