  • This is the course we offered: It’s designed to introduce tools, show how libraries are using them and encourages participants to use the tools. Everyone set up a blog which was their learning diary to keep track of their journey. The course looks at more than 25 web 2.0 tools and to date more than 1,000 library staff have participated.

Your libraries may get busier… <ul><li>the ageing of the Australian population </li></ul><ul><ul><li>more retirees who have time but limited incomes library use is likely to increase </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>with a much larger 85 years and older population demand for services such as home delivery will increase </li></ul></ul><ul><li>e-government and an increasing reliance on the internet to distribute information and services </li></ul><ul><li>multicultural communities requiring materials in community languages, English as a second language and support for new arrivals learning about living in Australia </li></ul><ul><li>increasing recognition of the vital role of early literacy activities before school begins in developing reading readiness </li></ul><ul><li>the digital divide which limits use of the internet for many people in the community due to a lack of access or skills. </li></ul>

Changes in the book industry <ul><li>In 2011, the book industry in Australia has experienced a year of unprecedented upheaval, characterised by media reports of the “death of the book” or at least the paper object we recognise as a book, the rapid growth of ebooks, a proliferation of ereader devices, the impact of online retailing and the loss of many local bookstores. </li></ul><ul><li>All of these things have impacts for public libraries… </li></ul>

    18. 18. REDgroup went into voluntary administration earlier this year, trailing debts of $170 million. By mid-July, all of its 26 Australian-based Borders stores, along with 114 Angus & Robertson shops , had been shut down, with the loss of more than 2000 jobs.
