You have a swanky new PC as your old one gradually got slower and no longer met your needs. You are astounded by the speed that it runs at compared to your tired, old model, and so you must now make sure that your new machine lasts. Getting into the habit of some PC Housekeeping is easy, and once you start you can keep it up to make sure that your PC is running at full capacity and that you aren’t wasting space on the local drive or the Server.

  • 1. Our guide to keeping your PC or laptop clean and tidy of unnecessary clutter.
  • 2. 1. Desktop Icons – remove unwanted icons and documents.2. My Documents – spring clean your documents and take advantage of anexternal USB hard drive.3. Recycle Bin – make sure you empty this regularly.4. Disk Cleanup – run this once a week.5. Disk Defragmenter – schedule your machine to run this in the background.6. Outlook Housekeeping – keep on top of your emails.7. Browser Housekeeping – keep your browser history tidy.
  • 3.  Check the size of data currently stored on your desktop Spring clean your icons Delete shortcuts that arent often used for programmes Move documents and files to My Documents Keep icons on the desktop to a minimum to speed up yourinitial boot
  • 4.  Create sub-folders to organise your My Documents folder Check how much data is currently being stored in MyDocuments folder Send older files, folders and documents to an external USBdrive to archive them
  • 5.  Items that you delete are still taking up room on your hard drive If you delete something by mistake, check the Recycle Bin to seeif you can retrieve it Make sure that items you no longer want are deleted completelyby emptying your Recycle Bin regularly
  • 6.  Disc Cleanup is a programme already installed on your computer You can run Disc Cleanup to delete data that you dont need to keep There are options on Disc Cleanup that allow you to choose what youwant to delete Remember to run the Disc Cleanup regularly to keep up with the de-cluttering process
  • 7.  Disc Defragmenter can be set up to run at regular intervals It is a programme that recovers white space after you have deleteddata that you dont need anymore When the programme runs automatically it runs in the background You can opt to run Disc Defragmenter whenever you want to You should set up your machine to run Disc Defragmenter regularly
  • 8.  A tidy inbox makes life so much easier Create sub folders so that you can file your emails away once you have dealtwith them Sub folders make it easier to find your emails Empty your Deleted Items folder regularly Use a service like Symantec Cloud to help keep your inbox tidy with antispam Select to archive old items
  • 9.  Keeping on top of browser related data helps the cleaning process Clear your Recent History regularly Choose what you want to delete from your Recent History
