Bank of Flight Examples at High Incidence and Typical Pilot Mistakes Causing Stall and Spin for MiG-29 and Su-27 Fighters (Version 1.00, January 1992) - User guide

Bank of flight examples helps to train pilots in analyzing flight data during high angle of attack maneuvers and to show them the development of stall and spin and typical mistakes during recovery. The program is designed as educational module. It displays computer animations along with the "run-time" comments explaining peculiarities of dynamics and control of an aircraft.

  • Bank of Flight Examples at High Incidence and Typical Pilot’s Mistakes Causing Stall and Spin for MiG-29 and Su-27 Fighters ( Version 1.00, 1.01.92 ) User’s guide 1 Purpose of the program. The program is intended for the pilots to get experience of analysis of flight information during maneuvers at high angles of attack, to get acquaintance with the development of stall and spin and typical mistakes during recovery. Bank of flight examples is designed in the style of educational program, allowing to view computer animation films with ”run-time” comments, explaining peculiarities of dynamics and control of an aircraft. Bank of flight examples allows enhance of its contents. 2 Abilities of the program. 1. For every type of the plane you can : • look through the list of the examples in bank and choose the flight you are interested in; 2. For every regime you can : • read the detailed description of the flight; • see the animation of the flight with ”run-time” comments explaining the behavior of the plane and pilot’s mistakes; • look at the trajectory of the flight; • view the parameters of the transient motion. 1
  • 3 Setup of the program. The working directory ( for example C:APM ) must contain the following files: Directory of filename -----------FUN BIN MIG DAT REG EXE VIEW EXE PLANEINF EXE PLANEVIZ EXE LHA EXE MIGW EXE ERROUT EXE MODERN FON PLANE RIS HELP TXT C:APM size -----25136 24 43702 56174 90524 26504 33951 282384 10729 7584 1746 0 date -------10-25-91 12-12-91 10-20-89 12-23-91 11-06-91 11-06-91 3-14-91 12-10-91 2-20-89 1-30-90 10-29-90 12-10-91 time -----1:50p 6:52p 5:29p 12:29p 2:58p 3:03p 7:30a 12:43p 11:53a 12:08p 12:57p 2:21p The working directory must contain subdirectory REGIMES with the following files: Directory of filename -----------LHA BAT MIG29 LOG MIG29 LZH MIG29R LZH MIG29C LZH SU27 LOG SU27 LZH SU27C LZH SU27R LZH C:APMREGIMES size -----82 3038 733295 9849 7462 1322 220214 4364 2724 date -------12-21-91 12-23-91 12-20-91 12-23-91 12-23-91 12-23-91 12-19-91 12-23-91 12-23-91 time -----11:00a 9:50a 5:49p 9:48a 9:48a 4:53p 6:47p 4:18p 4:18p The program will work correctly only if all the listed files are present and their length corresponds with the list. If any of the listed files is absent or its length does not match the list, you are to copy it from the distributive diskette. Note : The lists are valid for version 1.00. For newer versions of the program the amount, names and length of files may change. Use the list of the latest version in this case. For the program startup you should run the program REG.EXE according to the rules of MS–DOS operating system. 2
  • 4 Program’s description. After the start of the program you are to chose the type of aircraft from the following menu : ' Plane $ MiG–29 Su–27 & % Choose the plane using ”UP” and ”DOWN” arrow keys. Press ”ENTER” to accept your choice. After it you will see the list of flights containing brief information about every flight: • brief description of the flight; • type of the plane; • pilot’s name; • date and place of the flight; item where the flight was performed ( pilot’s workstation, flight simulator or real flight ). You can move through the list using ”UP” and ”DOWN” arrow keys ( moving one point above or below ), ”PAGE UP” and ”PAGE DOWN” keys ( moving one page ), ”HOME” and ”END” ( to the beginning and to the end of list ). At the bottom of the screen you can see what to do after the choice of flight. Press ”ENTER” to read the full description of flight. Press ”M” to see the animation of flight with ”run-time” comments. Press ”T” to look at the trajectory of the flight. Press ”G” to view the parameters of the transient motion. Press ”ESC” to exit the program. 4.1 Description of flight. Here you can read the description of pilot’s actions and the behavior of the plane. Press any key to return to the list of flight examples. 4.2 Animation. The screen shows the view from the the aircraft cockpit as well as the instrumental board. The mnemoscheme at the right side of the board shows positions of control stick, pedals and the engine rotor spin rate. At the right bottom side of the screen you can see the ”run-time” 3
  • comments of the pilot’s actions and the behavior of aircraft. After the end of the film you will return to the list of flight examples. During the animation you can press ”F9” key to see the view of the plane from outside instead of the view from cockpit. Instrumental board will remain on the screen. Press ”F9” again if you want to return to the view from cockpit. You can halt the animation by pressing ”PAUSE” key at the upper right side of the keyboard. Press any other key to continue the animation. Press ”ESC” to stop the animation and return to the list of flight examples. 4.3 Trajectory of the flight. Here you can see the trajectory of the flight and position of the aircraft at different parts of the trajectory. X axis is directed to the north. Press ”ESC” to return to the list of flight examples. 4.4 Plots of the parameters of transient motion. At first you see the title, explaining how to deal with the program. For a while you see the message ”Wait...”. Wait until it changes with the message ”Press any key...”. Then press any key to begin the output of parameters of transient motion. During the output you can see the yellow message ”WAIT”. After the end of output it changes with the green message ”READY”. You can interrupt the output by pressing ”ESC”. Other keys don’t affect the program during output. Parameters of transient motion are listed at two pages. The first page shows angles of attack and sidesleep (degrees), rotation rates (radians/sec), position of control stick and pedals (mm). The second page shows pitch and roll angles (degrees), height (m) and instrumental velocity (km/h), position of thrust levers (mm) and thrust of the engines (kG). You can change pages by pressing any key but ”ESC”. Press ”ESC” to return to the list of flight examples. 5 Contents of the bank of flight examples. Version 1.00 of the bank of flight examples contains 23 flights of MiG-29 aircraft and 10 flights for Su-27 aircraft, conducted at the pilot’s workstation in Central Aerohydrodynamics Institute. For MiG-29 aircraft : • 10 typical examples of flight regimes and pilot’s actions causing stall and spin ( by V.M. Danilenko ). • 13 educational examples, showing the development of stall and spin, pilot’s actions during spin recovery as well as typical mistakes during recovery and their consequences ( by V.E. Maximenko ). For Su-27 aircraft : • 10 typical examples of flight regimes and pilot’s actions causing stall and spin ( by V.M. Danilenko ). 4
