Social media allows businesses to build relationships with their consumers. This presentation takes a look at effective communication on social media platforms to help users create loyalty and increase engagement with your audience. There is a special emphasis on Facebook as a way to communicate with “friends” and fans.

  2. 2.  People use social media technologies to have conversations, to share information, and to create relationships.  The number of friends, fans, or followers you have is not important. It’s how you treat them.  The online forms of communicating include:  Blogs  Microblogs  social networking sites  Podcasts 2

  4. 4.  There are many ways to meet new people on Facebook:  Participate in your friend’s conversations  Like or comment on conversations in your News Feed  Join and participate in groups  Like a Fan Page  People participate in groups or like Fan Pages for many reasons:  To meet others who share their interest in – sports, movies, music, food, animals, other  To learn  To have detailed conversations about a topic not everyone is interested in discussing
  5. 5.  Using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter means you will have conversations with your new online friends.  Meeting friends in person is similar to meeting friends online. Count In Person Meeting Online Meeting 1 Introduce yourself and shake hands Introduce yourself and thank the person for connecting with you 2 Be courteous while talking A. Don’t make rude comments, even if joking. B. Don’t write comments on friends Facebook pages about you without asking permission 3 Listen and respond appropriately Read the entire comment before responding or asking a question. 4 Become a good friend Share photos, videos, and information on your page that your friends will like. 5 Don’t gossip! When talking about friends say nice things.

  8. 8. Find your friend’s Facebook pages and comment.
  9. 9.  Having conversations with friends in person is similar to having conversations with friends online.  Be courteous to your friend and their friends  Don’t argue  Use appropriate language  Read your friend’s original comment before posting your comment  It is okay to respond to comments posted by others, BUT be sure to read the comment first before posting yours.  What other tips would you add?  _________________________________________________________  _________________________________________________________  _________________________________________________________
  10. 10. Easily create groups from the home Page on Facebook.
  11. 11.  You can find groups by:  Searching Facebook  Asking your friends  Groups have three visibility options:  Open: Anyone on Facebook can see the group and join. The group will appear in search results and all content that members post is visible: photos, videos and discussions.  Closed: Everyone on Facebook can see the group name and members, but only group members can see posts in the group.  Another member can add you or you must ask to join.  Secret: These groups cannot be found in searches, and non-members can’t see anything about the group, including its name and member list.  Only a member of the group can add you to the group.
  12. 12. Easily find, like, and follow Fan Pages on Facebook.
  13. 13.  You can find Fan Pages by:  Searching Facebook  Asking your friends  Visiting the Fan Pages your friends Like.  How are Fan Pages different from Groups?  Pages allow real organizations, businesses to communicate with people who like them.  Page information and posts are public and available to everyone on Facebook.  Anyone can like a Page to become connected with it and get News Feed updates.
  14. 14.  Who participates in Groups and on Fan Pages?  Groups and Fan Pages are filled with people.  These people are potentially a new friend.  How do you treat friends?  How do you communicate in Groups and on Fan Pages?  Introduce yourself and shake hands  Be courteous while talking  Listen and respond appropriately  Stay on topic  Become a good friend  Don’t gossip!
  15. 15.  What about conversation on YOUR Facebook Page?  Share information on your Facebook page like:  Your blog posts  Pictures  Videos  Events  When your friends post comments on your page:  Respond  Like their posts  Share information they post on your page with your other friends … but ask first if it is okay.
