  6. 6. Relevance of this ResearchPathophysiological Importance– “Diabetes and obesity are alsoassociated with theoverproduction ofmitochondrial reactive oxygenspecies (Superoxide), leadingto mitochondrial and cellularoxidative damage.– This, in turn, contributes to thedevelopment and progressionof diabetic complications andto worsening of the diabeticstate per se.” William Sivitz,MD, EndocrinologistEtnopharmacological Importance• To study plants with antioxidant andfree radicals scavenging activity hasrelevance in the screening ofpossible therapeutics forhyperglycemia and diabetes.• Anti-diabetic activity of medicinalplants and its relationship withtheir antioxidant property, India,2003– Triphala – A mix of thre plantsT.chebula, T.belerica, E. 12. 12.  Around the world, mostly in India, several studies have been conductedto discover good antioxidant andscavenging plants extracts, in order todevelop new therapeutics to treatdiabetes. Six plants extracts were found in thedatabases of investigations around theworld, showing superoxide radicalscavenging activity. In our case, S.jambos aqueous andmethanolic extract, showed IC50’s of37.65g/mL and 79.24g/mLrespectively. Our results suggest that S.jambosis a good antioxidant andtherefore, more studies to screenphytochemicals that scavengesuperoxide radicals isrecommended to develop newtherapeutic methods to treatdiabetes.IC50 of Diabetes Adjuvants andsuperoxide scavengersAdjuvants around the world IC50’sSpondia spinatta 13.46μg/mlBasilici herba 57.15g/mLPanax ginseng 3.18μg/mLLagerstroemia speciosa 6.15μg/mLErvatamia coronaria 118.8μg/mL

  16. 16. Interdisciplinary WorkThrough all these processes the “Phytochemical and Pharmacognocial lab taughtme:-Have patience.-Learn English as a second language-Writing skills (Essays, Abstracts, introductions, summaries)- Do Scientific papers and a poster!-M.D. or Ph.D. as final career goals.-To have more confidence on me.-Share our things. We are a family!-Be responsible in our stuff.-Work hard and you will gain success.-Never gave up!-The capacity to hear and act.
