Year end presentation for Cypris Chat English learning community in Second Life 2010. Presented by Mike McKay (aka Professor Merryman)

Presentations and data are made public to help further publicize the benefits of language learning in spatial voice enabled realistic virtual worlds. We recognize that there simply is no other better way to receive immediate exposure to the language and with so much fun. It being free, at Cypris Chat, makes this even better.

    ---------
    Our Mission
We strive to provide an educational yet fun and interesting environment for English learning and teaching.
Our members have the chance to be part of a living community surrounded by others who are learning,
teaching or simply interested in speaking English with people from around the world.
We believe learning should be a way of life instead of a struggle to achieve.
    ---------
What are the 4 principles of Cypris?
    ---------
    Share
After joining our community, members should find ways to share what they have learned or done in Second Life.
Tell us where you have been, what you have seen.
how us your safe toys, clothes, avatars and gadgets.
    Sharing promotes communication.
    ---------
    Respect
Second Life is very different from real life, but it is real for many of us.
We all come from different cultures, different backgrounds and with different reasons for spending time in SL.
We might not understand each other but we both have the same goal, to learn or teach.
    -----------
    Respond
Let us know what you think about Cypris. Help us make this community a better place for you.
Your feedback is what makes Cypris so great. Your opinion matters the most.
Help each other with learner/teacher feedback.
    Communicate mistakes and successes.
    ----------
    Be Active
Speak. Talk. Ask questions. Say something.
We are not passive learners, we are active! In order to improve, we must practice.
To practice we must participate. To participate we must SPEAK! Less text chat and more voice chat.
We are here to help our members improve their ability to communicate in English.
    ----------
    BEGIN
Hello everyone! Thank you very much for coming to our annual officer’s gala.
This year we had a lot of fun. We met a lot of new friends. We learned or taught a lot of English.
Some of us were able to work through some very tough times.
But with the support of our friends here we were able to manage and move on.
Cypris has helped us in many ways.
Let's be hopeful that it will be able to continue helping for a very long time.
Thank you, our most active members, for ensuring this will happen.
And now I would like to present some data from 2010.

Cypris Chat was born on December 8, 2008. We are now two years old.
In 2010 we had over 700 hours of free English learning activities and lessons.
More than 30 members volunteered an estimated six hours per week of their time to help. That's almost 1,000 hours! I know many who volunteered MORE time!!
Membership is steadily growing, ACTIVE membership is also growing at 1.3 new members per week (estimated from total last year). Great work greeters!!
    Current ACTIVE membership: 475
    Sim visitors: Average 200 visitors/day: 90 unique.
Average time spent on sim: 27 minutes.
Countries visiting Cypris Village: 40+ per week
Unfortunately, 65 members were ejected last week for not being active in Second Life for more than 120 days.
150+ members were ejected in 2010. They can easily request to join again, unless they have been banned.
Only six people were banned from the group and sim in 2010.
Donations for 2010 came to $1,700.00 USD (estimated). It is very difficult to convert PayPal and Lindens with different currencies. Numbers based on Cypris Texan account activity.
We did not reach our goal of $1,000.00 USD for the Dec/Jan bi-annual donation drive.
We will not be able to pay for our island from June.
Cypris Chat was presented at more than 20 conferences and meetings around the world this year.
Cypris Chat has an active YouTube channel, Flickr account, Facebook group and page, Twitter account, and many international group pages including Slmame in Japan
New for 2011 - We have two new radio stations streaming at Cypris Village: Cypris Chat Radio and Club Cypris. Cypris Chat Radio will play English only music, podcasts, news, weather, and entertainment. Club Cypris will play music in English only.
Online store opening soon. We will have REAL products designed around the Cypris Chat logo and Cypris Village themes. Shipping to 233 countries. All proceeds are used to help Cypris Chat grow.
Cypris Chat Mile High Club formed. This group is comprised of consistently active members and officers.
This group is crucial for communication between members.
The officers group will be organized into a formal group with roles and titles given to elected members.
Current calendar of activities is growing. We have nine different regular activities happening at Cypris Village every week. More activities are being planned. Can you help?
The Cypris Chat ePortfolio website (http://cyprischat.org) is being upgraded in the next few months. Tutorials and a wiki will be created to help members use the site.
Would you like to become an officer at Cypris? Make friends at Cypris, volunteer to start an activity, help others learn about the group. Share, Respect, Respond, Be Active! We would love to know more about you. :-)
