In 2009, non-grocery retailers saw a 9.5%% increase in sales from 2008. In 2010, non-grocery retailers saw a 11.67% increase in sales from 2009. In 2009, all grocery retailers saw a 10.65% increase in sales from 2008. In 2010, all grocery retailers saw a 12.82% increase in sales from 2009.

    • 17. Retail Landscape The number of shopping malls are to steadily increase in the coming years. • At present there are 400 shopping malls, namely in Delhi and surrounding areas, as well as Mumbai. Shopping malls are seen as high footfall locations. Therefore, most grocery and non-grocery retailers are moving towards opening shops in shopping malls, rather than independent stores, i.e. a Kirana shop. Specialty malls are also being constructed
    • 18. Luxurious Malls In 2008, a luxury shopping mall opened in Delhi, i.e. DLF Emporio, which offered an exclusive show featuring a live piano and violin. • This mall targeted the high-income segment, including business folks that can afford luxurious commodities.

    • 21. An Increase in Grocery Retailing Growth in 2010 was higher for grocery retailers than their non-grocery counterparts, partly due to the double-digit inflation on food commodities.
    • 22. An Increase in Grocery Retailing Factors: • Increasing food inflation rates. • The incessant growth of hypermarkets. • The overly dominant nature of Kirana stores in retailing in India. As a result, food/drink/tobacco specialists and independent small grocers enjoyed an increasing sales growth.
