  • IntroductionAdsorption is a process of attracting molecules frombulk fluid to a solid surface. The best and most famousof such solids known is activated carbon. Activatedcarbon (AC) is one of the best discoveries that manever made in technological advancement. Someregards AC as natures gift to man with its use in air,water and food purification, and in the field of medicinewhich are among man’s essential commodities. It canalso be used for treating industrial effluents, oil spillsand an inexhaustible list of areas of application. BASSIM H. HAMEEDProfessor Dr. Bassim H. Hameed receivedhis Ph.D. in Chem. Eng. from University ofSalford, UK, in 1992. He is a Professor atSchool of Chemical Engineering, UniversitiSains Malaysia. His research interest isReaction Engineering and AdsorptionTechnology. He is an internationallyrecognized expert in field of production ofactivated carbon. To date, he has publishedmore than 150 articles in ISI-indexedjournals and other 80 articles inInternational and national journals andproceedings. The quality of his publicationmerited him over 4300 times citations(Scopus records) with 7 having been citedabove 100 times each; his author h-index is40. Currently, he is the top cited Malaysian-based author in Engineering, 2001-2010according to MOHE, Malaysian CitationCentre, 2012 with average citations perpublication of 27.26. According to a recentScience Direct report, more than 15 of hisarticles were among the Top 25 HottestArticles accessed in 2007-2012. Currentlyhe serves as a reviewer for manyinternational journals published byprestigious publishers. He has reviewedmore than 500 manuscripts. He is arecipient of three Sanggar Sanjung (Hall ofFame) awards for Research Product in2003 and 2004 and USM ExcellentAchievement Award in 2007 and 2011. Alsohe was a recipient of Sanggar SanjungAwards in 2007-2011 for Excellence inPublication in top ISI-indexed journals.
