1.) Think Paint.
When restoring a kitchen on a budget, paint truly works
miracles and it works on almost everything. If your cabinets are in need of sprucing up, paint them
inside and out. If they are originally a form of old, tired wood, use a very glossy, white spray-paint, or
try an oil-based creamy white paint that you can brush on by hand. Painting kitchen cabinets instead
of completely replacing them is a sure way to save big.
After you finish with the kitchen cabinets, look into repainting your kitchen walls. A fresh coat of paint
can have a dramatic impact on any room in the house. When it comes to paint, color is not necessar-
ily everything. Compare textures and glosses. For the kitchen walls, try out latex satin enamel paint in
either a soft sheen or no sheen in a color that really contrast with your updated cabinets.
2.) New Hardware.
Many times when you give kitchen cabinets a coat of paint, you realize that the cabinet pulls and hard-
ware no longer function with the cabinets. Replacing the hardware adds the extra punch to make your

3.) Take It Away.
One way to open up a kitchen space is to remove a couple of cabinet doors and construct some inex-
pensive shelving that can be used as display space. This works well for making small kitchens appear
larger. If you do choose to remove a few cabinet doors, be sure to paint the insides of them. You can
either paint them the same color as the outside, or if you are feeling really creative, add a pop of color
to the insides that works well with the entire color scheme of the room.

Remove the solid cabinet doors and replace them with glass inserts. This technique is great for all
kitchen types because there are a wide range of glass inserts available. You can choose from clear,
frosted, or even vintage glass that is mastered down to fit the space.

fixtures, keep the overall style of your kitchen in mind. You wouldn’t want to place wire suspension,

9.) Mirror, Mirror on the Wall.
Hanging mirrors in any small room immediately add space without costly alterations. This project
works especially well for those with galley kitchens. Just place a nicely framed mirror on the back wall
of your galley kitchen to get greater dimension and a seemingly larger space. You can also place mir-
rors above refrigerators, in breakfast nooks, or on the floor rested against a spare wall (this only works
with incredibly large, framed mirrors).
10.) Dress Windows.
Similar to a fresh coat of paint, new window coverings can restore an entire wall. For light control, use
matchstick blinds cut-to-fit or metal-toned mini blinds. Even small shutters can be installed in a single
afternoon and are readily available in white or neutral. If you want to add color to the area but don’t
want to hang curtains, try painting or staining the small shutters.
