2. Previously in lesson, we
learnt about the ‘male gaze’.
The male gaze referred to
how women are portrayed
and looked at within the
media e.g. horror movies. It
is suggested that women are
shown as sex symbols and
are exploited. In general,
gaze referrers to the way
people are looked at/
viewed by the audience.
3. Feminists support this
statement about the ‘male
gaze’, and suggest that the
‘gaze’ can be explained in
three ways;
> How women are looked at
by men
> How women look at their
selves
> How women view other
women
4.
5. Factors about the
Male Gaze
• The camera often pays extra emphasis on the
woman’s body; clearly displaying certain
factors which attract men e.g. curves.
• It shows women as an object. It exposes the
woman’s body and puts it on display.
7. Further criticising Mulvey’s Gaze
Theory
• The theory makes men look like they are in
the wrong, however in some cases women
actually like being looked at, e.g; models.
• People may look at others within the same
gender in the same way, suggesting that it
may not always be sexual.
