(As featured in Women’s World and In Style Magazine) What’s HOT in Hollywood and all the RAGE in NYC?? ThermaCool, or Thermage is a FDA approved medical device developed to help correct the signs of aging. It uses radio frequency waves to cause collagen contraction and tightening and new collagen production, which occurs over a period of time. The results include tightening, lifting and smoothing of the skin. The Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Center of Charlotte is the only clinic to bring this technology to North Carolina. ThermaCool has been used to treat eye wrinkles, sagging cheeks, jowls, and loose skin on the neck. It can also be used on other parts of the body such as abdomen and thighs. Depending on the size of the area, the treatment takes anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. A cooling sensation is delivered to the skin the same time as the heat wave, minimizing discomfort. Topical numbing cream may also be used. Best of all, there is no downtime! You may go back to normal daily activities immediately. Results are gradual, and transform in most patients over a one to six month period. Studies have showed that patients treated with a single session yielded good results. For best results, two or more treatments may be needed. The final results will last one to two years and then once the aging process sets in again, maintenance treatments are recommended. Botox can help Botox is a simple, 10-minute non-surgical cosmetic procedure used to smooth lines and wrinkles between your eyebrows and crows feet. The natural, purified protein relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles. The Botox is injected into the area by a physician. Most patients find the discomfort of the treatment similar to a bug bite, but this is temporary. Ice or numbing cream may be used prior to treatment to minimize pain, but usually not necessary, specially due to Dr. Rostan’s gentle technique. There is no downtime and activities can be resumed immediately. Results are seen within a few days and last up to 4 months. Although results are significant, normal facial expressions are still possible. Try this affordable, widely used cosmetic procedure before an important event in your life, don’t you deserve to look your best? For more information visit: Spring has Sprung! 2. 2. Newsletter 2 RESTYLANE AND PERLANE All fillers are not created equal. until recently, the most frequently used filler for filling facial wrinkles and frown lines has been injectable collagen. Collagen injections, a filler from cows, have been around for years. it is used to plump up and fill in lines and creases in the face that Botox cannot. Because collagen does come from animals, there is a 3% risk of an allergic reaction. Restylane/Perlane contains a synthetic hyaluronic acid, which is an acid your body produces naturally. As a result, there is no fear of a reaction to Restylane. What is even better is that it requires less of the product to fill lines versus collagen and it lasts longer, from 4 to 6 months, versus collagen that lasts about 3 months. Restylane/Perlane is not currently FDA-approved in the U.S. however, it has been used in 61 countries in Europe for years and FDA approval is expected in the U.S. by June 2003. Available upon request at Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Center of Charlotte. Call today for a consultation! ASK DR. ROSTAN Q: What are Fotofacials? A: Fotofacials or Photoderm is a series of Intense Pulsed Light treatments, which over time improve skin tone, texture and facial redness, decrease pore size, fine lines, sunspots, blotchy skin color and facial veins. Q: What is the difference between ThermaCool and Cooltouch? A: ThermaCool uses radio frequencies of heat to contract and tighten and “lift” the skin and regenerate collagen. CoolTouch also regenerates collagen, but rather than lifting/tighening the skin, CoolTouch is use more as a wrinkle/fine line treatment. ALL ABOUT FAT – Liposculpture, Is it SAFE? As many of you already know, Liposculpture or Liposuction is a body shaping procedure for areas of the face and body where heredity fat deposits accumulate which are resistant to diets and exercise. What many of you may not know, it that now it is easier and less painful than ever to shed fat in those unwanted trouble spots. Tumescent Liposculpture promises a quick recovery and minimal scaring, bruising or downtime. “Traditional liposuction typically involves general anesthesia, more bleeding and swelling resulting in more bruising. That is why it becomes painful,” according to Dr. Elizabeth Rostan who has trained under Dermatologist, Dr. Jeffery Klein, inventor of the Tumescent Technique. But, what does “Tumescent” mean? What separates this technique from others is that the procedure uses a large amount of liquid –dilute local anesthesia, which is pumped by the liter into areas to be treated. The fluid consists of mainly lidocaine, which numbs and ephinephrine, which constricts blood vessels. The cannulas (suction tool) used in tumescent liposculpture are thinner as well. These cannulas suck out the fluid along with the fat simultaneously. Unlike traditional liposuction, the procedure is done under a local anesthesia while the patient is awake. Dr. Rostan explains, “Risk of complications increases significantly when patients are under general anesthesia.” Major complications, even deaths have occurred as well when more than one procedure, such as a tummy tuck are being performed. There are also strict guidelines in place as to how much fat can be taken out. When other procedures are involved this could unintentionally be exceeded. Tumescent Liposuction has never caused any fatalities because it was developed to increase the safety of the procedure. Patients are encouraged to go for a walk just hours after the procedure. Dressings will need to be worn for a few days, a girdle or support bandage will need to be worn for a week to two weeks following the procedure and heavy exercise should be avoid for about a week. Daily activities can be resumed in a day or two. Now it is safer and easier than ever! Introducing Meladine, a topical melanin enhancer solution that is absorbed by the hair follicle and provides a temporary target for laser treatments. The solution is meant for patients with white, gray and blond hair, which traditionally has too little melanin or wrong type of melanin to treat with laser. It is a hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic and coloration within the follicle is only temporary. It is sprayed onto desired area and deposits melanin directly into the hair follicle without staining surrounding skin. (Continued on Page 4) Fight Psoriasis with XTRAC XTRAC is the first FDA market-approved excimer laser system for the treatment of psoriasis. By using a carefully focused beam of light delivered through a sophisticated fiber-optic device, the XTRAC system allows doctors to use high doses of UVB necessary for fast, effective treatment without risk of exposure to healthy skin. XTRAC laser is unlike any other treatment available for psoriasis today. Ina recent article, it was reported that XTRAC laser provided clearance of psoriasis in six treatments on average. Compared to current treatments, this therapy can be a great benefit to patients in terms of time and effectiveness. The excimer laser treatment may also result in longer remissions, providing you with more time free of painful and unsightly lesions. Even better news, the American Medical Association has recently approved new insurance billing codes for laser treatment of psoriasis. As a result, many health plans including Medicare are covering the XTRAC treatments. It may be that your insurance company is also reimbursing now as well. Call today to set up a consultation to determine if you are a candidate for this exciting new laser treatment. We are ready to help you fight psoriasis with XTRAC.
