The commitment of the faculty to the athletic training student is based on the belief that graduates must be able to communicate clearly and effectively while providing ideal health care to student athletes. The athletic training program challenges and prepares each student to make appropriate decisions and important judgments regarding sudden injury and life threatening situations. Through diverse educational and research experiences, it is our mission to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and values that an entry-level athletic trainer must possess. In addition, the program will strive to maintain and surpass the standards of accreditation as specified by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) in association with the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA). V. Course Prerequisites: None VI. Course Description: This course will provide an overview of the roles and responsibilities of a variety of allied health professionals and their contributions to the total sports medicine team. This course will provide an in-depth knowledge of how other health practitioners are related to athletic training. It will also contribute to the knowledge and skills that an entry-level athletic trainer must possess to recognize specific medical conditions and injuries. VII. Text: General Medical Conditions in the Athlete by Cuppett and Walsh (required) VIII. Course Goals: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Recognize, treat, and refer the general medical conditions and disabilities of athletes and others involved in physical activity. 2. Recognize, assess and treat the acute injuries and illnesses of athletes and others involved in physical activity. 3. Develop contacts with allied health care facilities that provide care to the physically active. 4. The student will locate and utilize pharmaceutical products, storage, dispensing, and tracking information. 5. The student will activate a poison control service. 6. Locate the nearest poison control center and replicate the reporting of a drug overdose or poisoning situation. a. Your name and location b. Name and age of person taking medication c. Name and dosage of drug taken d. Time the drug was taken e. S/S of overdose or poison situation 12. Replicate the following procedures for using an emergency epinephrine pen: a. Identify indications for an epinephrine injection b. Demonstrate proper use through verbal and nonverbal instruction c. Identify s/s that might indicate an allergic rxn to epinephrine d. Demonstrate proper storage of epinephrine injectable e. Demonstrate proper disposal of used injection system 13. Replicate the following procedures for using an emergency bronchodilator t to prevent asthma attacks: a. Identify indications for use of a bronchodilator b. Demonstrate proper use through verbal and nonverbal instruction c. Identify s/s that might indicate an allergic rxn of a bronchodilator d. Demonstrate proper storage of a bronchodilator X. Outline of Course Content/Units of Instruction Lecture, discussion, demonstration, laboratories, audio-visual aides, and guest speakers will be used as methods of instruction. Course Requirements/Evaluation Projects: Two individual papers and presentations on the topics discussed in class. Paper is to be no more than 3 typed (double spaced pages) and is to include: the disease, disease pathology, signs and symptoms of the disease, predisposing conditions, and treatment options. Project: Using multimedia equipment, the student will present a 15 minute presentation your assigned topic. Students will use a minimum of five quality references for the presentation. These references will be turned in for evaluation by the instructor. 4 Article Reviews 100 points each Papers and Presentations 100 points each Practical Skills 100 points Participation points will vary Grading Scale: 100% - 90% - A 89.4 - 80% - B 79.4 - 70% - C *Students in the AT major must achieve a “C” or better.
