There isn’t one thing that creates the IMAX Experience but rather a comprehensive suite of Intellectual Property that enhances every step along the chain that on a cumulative basis create an experience that consistently puts the audience In the Movie. We manipulate the theatre geometry and the source material – both image and sound, enhance the server, use multiple projectors, have automated diagnostic tools that tweak sound and picture to maintain consistency of presentation, customized lense suites to maximize image fidelity in our theatre geometry, the IMAX Image Enhancer which layers images pixel on pixel and a proprietary sound system designed specifically for each theatre…
This image illustrates the viewing relationship between the screen and a patron sitting in the middle of a stadium seat auditorium …
By bringing the screen closer to the patron and having the screen stretch from wall to wall and floor to ceiling we dramatically alter the field of view of the patron.
In 3D all of the action must take place within the viewing pyramid and thus large objects – such as this train – will appear too small when it moves toward the audience, and the realism is lost …
Whereas the IMAX viewing pyramid allows the train to appear lifelike right up to your nose – just before it runs you over!!
Not only is our new digital system unique and dynamic today but our engineers are already working to enhance the system for the future, with software upgrades which will allow you to bring new or enhanced experiences to the theatre without having to replace the hardware. Real time concerts and sporting events – that will look IMAX and IMAX 3D are not that far off at all …

Conventional Theatre Field of View What you see here is a typical conventional theatre showing the field of view for an individual sitting in the centre seat. In order for a presentation to be immersive, the image must fill much of your horizontal and vertical peripheral vision
What you now see is a retrofit of the same conventional theatre to an IMAX configuration. Notice that the field of view has significantly increased. The yellow area on the diagram represents this increase IMAX Theatre Field of View
Conventional 3D Object Position Because the viewing pyramid is narrow in a conventional theatre, large objects such as the train you see here will appear too small when it moves closer to audience, and the realism is lost.
IMAX 3D Object Position The viewing pyramid in an IMAX theatre is substantially larger thereby allowing 3D objects to maintain their lifelike size and be brought closer to the audience. IMAX is the only venue capable of presenting realistic, lifelike 3D presentations that totally immerse you in the story.
