Working in partnership can reap fantastic rewards when there is an element of trust. This presentation uses a real life example of TRUST between myself and DAVE the abseiling anchor man, this being my one and only attempt at abseiling.
A couple of years ago I received invitation to abseil down the Nottingham Trent University Newton Building for RED CROSS charity. I quickly said “Yes.” There were several reasons why my response needed to be so speedy: My family would think I was crazy I would think I was crazy No one I knew had ever done it before I probably wasn’t good enough. And I might change my mind if I tried to reason it out and listen to doubters … This scenario could just as easily be describing the thoughts of young people planning their next study or work move. Many young people growing up in mining communities, such as Bilsthorpe, would have expected to find mining or textile related work, but the pits closed, taking with them the employment aspirations of young people. Discussion: What happens when the jobs rug is pulled from underneath the feet of a community?
Of course abseiling is not something you should attempt to do without the proper equipment and support. Dave, my mentor and anchor man was an expert in his field, he showed me how to wear the harness. He convinced me that I had the support I needed. He talked me over the edge of the building and into the unknown. Overcoming the fear of standing on the edge of your comfort zone and dropping off backwards does not come naturally to most people. This is young people may be feeling in the current climate. Discussion: How can you facilitate partnerships that will help young people to overcome their fears?
Once over the edge there was a moment of panic when I could not see Dave. I shouted “ Are you still there? Don’t leave me, Dave.” A calming voice reassured me and I decided to try and enjoy the ride. Suddenly motivated to aspire to being Spiderwoman or Lara Croft, I kicked off from the wall like a true professional. Like a true professional. Discussion: How will you be there when a young person panics?
It took collaboration with the experts to set my feet firmly back on solid ground. I had succeeded beyond any ones expectations, especially my own and was eager to develop my new skills further – but someone said to me “Don’t think of trying that again too soon” and I didn’t. Discussion: With whom will you need to consult and collaborate at the planning and implementation stages? How will you try to ensure that your project is sustainable on the longer term by and for young people? How will you know when you have succeeded?
Since ‘the abseil’ down Nottingham Trent University’s Newton Building the world has taken on a whole new look for me. Discussion: How would you like to help change your ‘world’ or the world of young people within and outside of the scope of this presentation.
