The Sheffield FC Leisure Complex Enquiry
Sheffield Football Club, the oldest in the world is to be taken over by a
Russian billionaire with ambitions of FA Cup and European Cup glory. He
plans to invest millions in a new 70,000-seater stadium, a fitness club,
shopping centre, cinema and a brand new team.
There are 3 possible locations for the leisure complex. They are:
• Works off Abbeydale Road Grid Reference 34 5 84 5
• Area of open space on Norfolk Park Grid Reference 36 7 85 9
• Grange Farm/The Oaks Grid Reference 36 7 82 2
Your task is to assess each site and decide which is the best one for
development.
Task 1. Make three basic copies of the grid shown on sheet 2 in your
blue books. Then fill the grids with as much information as possible about
the characteristics of each site.
Task 2. Decide which you think is the best site. On an A3 sheet, present
your plan.
• Include an annotated map.
• Explain why your chosen site is the best
• Explain how you will overcome the problems associated with your
site e.g.
1. Rivers (i.e. flooding)
2. Steep hillsides
3. Lack of car parking space
4. Lack of public transport
5. Proximity to other leisure complexes
6. Opposition from locals
7. Building on a ‘greenfield’ or brownfield’ site.
The billionaire will only find an exciting but realistic project. There’s a
lot money available but it’s not unlimited. Save some for the stadium and
for the team.
Homework:
Find some (small) pictures of your new Sheffield FC team. You can use any
players in the world but none that currently play for Sheffield Utd or
Wednesday. You can include these as your chosen team on your final
piece of work. You may also want to search for a picture of a suitable
stadium that will represent what will be built on your chosen site.
