    1. Settlement Hierarchy Aim: To find out what settlement hierarchy is and how it is ordered.
    2. What does it look like?
    3. How is worked out?
      • Number of services . Look at figure 2 on page 126. Copy figure into your book and label.
      • Sphere of influence – this is the area served by the settlement. It can also be called the catchment area or hinterland
      • See separate diagram on the board.
    4. How else?
      • 3. The Threshold Population .
      • How many people do you need to
      • live in a settlement to support?
      • Village shop
      • Primary school
      • Shoe shop
      • Medium sized store
      • Supermarket e.g. Tesco.
    5. How else?
      • The range of a good – This means the maximum distance people are prepared to travel to use a shop or service.
      • Give examples for:
      • Alton Towers
      • Spar Shop on Meadowhead
      • Chesterfield FC.
      • London Eye
