GCSE Settlement Lesson 1 Aim: To find out about the different siting factors for settlements
The need to know words
Settlement – Places where people live and work. There are a whole range of different size settlements from one farm to a mega city with millions of people.
Site – Is the actual land that the settlement is built on, e.g. Sheffield’s site covers seven hills.
Situation – the situation of a settlement refers to it’s location in relation to what is around it.
E.g Sheffield…
is to the east of Manchester, the south of Leeds, the North of Chesterfield and the west of Lincoln. Sheffield also lies on the north east edge of the Peak District.
