Lesson 1 Farming

  1. 1. Farming Aim: To find out about the different types of farming in the UK. Resources New Connections – p.28-31 Colour Pencils Ohhhhh Arghhhhhhh !!!!!!!
  2. 2. Arable This means ploughing the land and growing crops.
  3. 3. Pastoral Rearing Animals for meat and wool. This includes sheep, cow & pig farming fool
  4. 4. Mixed You guessed it – a mixture of growing crops and rearing animals
  5. 5. Activities – Arable Farming <ul><li>Read the information on Arable Farming on p.28 then answer these questions: </li></ul><ul><li>Give examples of crops that may be grown on an arable farm? </li></ul><ul><li>What type of climate is needed for crops to grow? </li></ul><ul><li>Why must arable farms be close to their markets? </li></ul>

Activities – Pastoral Sheep Farming <ul><li>Read the information on sheep farming on p.28 </li></ul><ul><li>then answer the following questions: </li></ul><ul><li>Name the three products that would come from a sheep farm? </li></ul><ul><li>Why are sheep so hardy? </li></ul><ul><li>Are sheep picky about what they eat? </li></ul><ul><li>Why is the land unsuitable to grow crops on? </li></ul>Click on each sheep for a different short film on farming in Snowdonia 2:47 & 2.27

Activities – Pastoral Cattle Farming <ul><li>Read the information on cattle farming on p.29 </li></ul><ul><li>then answer the following questions: </li></ul><ul><li>What products can cows be used to produce? </li></ul><ul><li>What do cows need? </li></ul><ul><li>Why must cattle farms be close to main roads? </li></ul><ul><li>How is milk transported to the dairy? </li></ul>

Activity from the book… <ul><li>Complete Activity 2 on page 29 </li></ul><ul><li>Remember: </li></ul><ul><li>Human = something controlled or caused by human beings, e.g. the government </li></ul><ul><li>Physical = something controlled or caused by something natural e.g weather </li></ul><ul><li>Then copy summary at the bottom of the page. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Homework Create a menu record of food you eat in one day and say which type of farm each product comes from. (a) = arable (p) = pastoral Eg. bread = wheat = arable Beef = cow = pastoral You can present it using pictures ~ draw your own or get them from magazines, computer etc

Extension Activity <ul><li>Make a list of all the food you ate yesterday from your breakfast to your late night snack. </li></ul><ul><li>Next to each type of food say whether it came from an arabl e or pastoral farm. </li></ul><ul><li>e.g. Beef burger from Café Ole; </li></ul><ul><li>Bread = wheat = arable </li></ul><ul><li>Beef = cow = pastoral </li></ul>
