One of the most important and often overlooked things for a leader to understand is themselves. Leaders are much more effective when they understand their own strengths, weaknesses, and the values they hold.

Studying theories and the work of academics seems boring and even unnecessary. But a leader can quickly become more effective by learning from the experts.
Particular theories and models may work in one situation, but not in another so the more a leader knows, the more effective he or she will be.

3. Leadership styles and relationships.
Leaders tend to develop their own style, and learning about different leadership styles is essential to becoming a great leader. Knowing which style might be appropriate to a particular situation is invaluable .

4. Time Management.
Probably one of the most difficult challenges for leaders is the limited amount of time available to accomplish a maximum amount of work. Leaders must understand how to best use the limited periods of time available to them.

5. Interpersonal relationships.
Leaders are most effective when they understand how to work with subordinates, peers, and supervisors. Being a leader means a change in relationships with others, whether followers, peers, or bosses.

6. Delegation, problem solving, and decision making.
The ability to delegate, solve problems, and make decisions are very similar. They rely on evaluating a situation and taking action based on the information available. They can all be risky but a great leader must master these three skills.
