PoiMapper

 1. 1. Mobile GIS data collection - PoiMapper Quick facts: Country: Kenya Project duration: 2010-2011 Funding: Ministry of Foreign Affairs Finland Project’s objective is to pilot the use of mobile GIS data collection methods for mapping the important social services such as wells, hospitals, schools and households in the program areas in Kilifi, Kenya. This is done to evaluate the use of mobile tools effectiveness in Plan's program work in order to have a sound understanding of the provision of availability and access to services. Solution was developed as a consortium of small and medium enterprises. PoiMapper includes several modules most important being mobile phone application and internet portal for viewing and analyzing the data. Data is collected by Plan field staff while visiting the program areas.
 2. 2. Why ICT

Traditional pen&paper based data collection methods are time consuming and require labor intensive work with the need to retype data in to the digital format afterwards. Dedicated GPS devices are also needed resulting increase in resources. Affordable mobile phone based data collection tools will allow data to be collected directly into digital format making the data available near real time for global use. Adding, phones GPS feature data can be mapped on top of digital maps for analyses and better program planning. With camera, important visual data can be captured for decision making and proof of the condition of collected data with only one device.

www.plan.fi/ict4d
