    2. North Korean Invasion
      • On the 25 th June 1950, around 100,000 North Korean troops marched over the 38 th Parallel.
      • Only 3 days later, Seoul had fallen to the North Korean Forces.
      • By September the Allied troops only had hold of Pusan in the South West of the Country.

    4. Counterattack
      • General Douglas MacArthur organised the counterattack, landing UN forces at Inchon and pushing on to the 38 th Parallel.
      • The USA then carried on across the 38 th Parallel and into North Korea.
      • This was a change from the policy of containing communism. Instead they planned to drive communism out of Korea – Rollback.

    5. Counterattack
      • By October the USA had reached the Yalu River and were almost in China.

    6. Chinese Advance
      • China felt threatened by the American Forces at the Yalu River.
      • MacArthur continued his offensive and so around 260,000 Chinese troops went over the Yalu River.
      • In temperatures of -20 o C the communists pushed the Allies back and recaptured Seoul in January 1951.

    7. Armistice
      • As fighting centred on the 38 th parallel with little movement on either side peace talks began.
      • They were halted by
        • Stalin’s influence and desire to get more out of America
        • Disagreement over Repatriation.
      • Stalin died in March 1953 and the armistice was signed.

    8. Armistice
      • The border remained almost identical to the pre war one. Three Years of Fighting had changed very little.

    9. Aims and Achievements - USA
      • To stop South Korea becoming Communist.
      • Rollback communism and wipe it out of Korea.
      • Show they would not tolerate communist aggressors.
      • Prevented South Korea becoming a Communist State.
      • Showed the world, they were against communism and would fight against more communist states.

    10. Aims and Achievements - USSR
      • Not become involved in the War.
      • Increase Communist areas in South East Asia.
      • Look after the interests of the Soviet Union.
      • Threaten the US’ new ally Japan.
      • Didn’t get involved directly in the war.
      • Managed to influence ceasefire talks.

    11. Aims and Achievements - China
      • Show the country’s power and military might.
      • Defend its border from attack.
      • Extend Communist Rule in the Far East.
      • Establish itself as a country with communist leadership.
      • Managed to protect its border.
      • Became the a communist power in Asia.
      • Showed its military power.

    12. Aims and Achievements – The UN
      • Establish itself as a credible organisation.
      • To prevent spread of communism.
      • To not be the USA’s puppet.
      • Stopped spread of communism.
      • Showed they were separate from the League of Nations.
