  • Elavon is a Discover Acquirer just like Visa and MasterCard. In the near future we are rolling out a program with American Express similar to Discover acquiring. However, Amex will set the fees and basis points. Right now we have the AMEX ESA program where Elavon will initiate the Amex set up but Amex sets the rates and only authorization revenue is made.
  • The Elavon Host – This is a system called Stratus that routes information between the merchant’s terminal or processing software, the issuing banks and the merchant accounting system. Any Host other than Elavon’s is considered a Foreign Network such as VisaNet, MAPP, and Bypass. The Merchant Accounting System – Elavon uses US Bank's accounting system called MPS or Merchant Processing System. MPS sends the merchant’s transactions to Interchange for Payment, houses the monthly fees, and bills the merchant for their monthly fees, which includes discount rates. Interchange – The Clearing and settlement system where information is exchanged between Elavon and the Issuing bank. The Depository Bank – The bank where the merchant has her Demand Deposit Account or DDA.
  • The Transaction Process consists of two parts: Authorization and Settlement. The first part of the transaction process concentrates on the Authorization of the credit card. First, let’s define what an Authorization is: Authorization: The permission of the Issuing Bank to accept a credit card for payment.” Now that we know what an Authorization is, how do we get one? Transactions can be swiped or hand-keyed through the POS. When card is entered, the POS dials out to obtain authorization through the acquirer’s HOST computer. Once the HOST receives the call, it sends the transaction off to the Card Associations who looks at the first 6 digits of the credit card number, which is called the BIN, or Bank Identification Number to see which bank issued the card. Then, it calls that bank to get authorization for the transaction. If transaction is approved, the POS prints a receipt for the cardholder to sign. If declined, receipt may print stating the transaction was declined. Cardholder will need to call Issuing Bank to find out why the sale was declined.
  • There are two ways that an authorization can occur. The most common way is by gaining an authorization through a terminal or a software. The merchant swipes a card through a magnetic stripe reader or key enters it and the POS system sends the transaction data to the Elavon Host for an authorization. The Host interprets the information and determines where the data should go for authorization, i.e. Visa, Mastercard, AMEX or Discover. The Elavon Host then sends the transaction to the issuing bank through the VISA or Mastercard network or out to the another service such as AMEX. The issuer then sends an approval or some other response back to the Elavon Host and in turn to the merchants POS System. What are some possible Host responses? Approval Code Declined Pick Up Card Call Auth Another way to gain an Authorization is through the Elavon Voice Authorization Center.
  • Now that we are familiar with how the merchant obtains an authorization for a transaction, how do they get paid for it? Lets take a look at the Settlement Process. Merchant must settle their POS to be paid for the transactions. Definition of Settlement : The sending through the Card Associations of the credit card transactions accumulated by the merchant in the POS or Host so the merchant can be paid for them. Both authorization and settlement must happen before a merchant will be paid for the transactions ***The first part of settlement is how the merchant is funded for the transactions that they process. A merchant accepts a transaction and then it is processed through the Elavon Network. The transaction is processed through MPS and then funds are sent via ACH to the merchant’s DDA. NOTE: The Automated Clearing House is a division of the Federal Reserve that sends funds to the DDA. ***The Next part of the settlement process is how Elavon gets paid by the issuing bank for transactions that Elavon has already paid the merchant for. MPS sends the transaction to Interchange. Interchange uses the BIN to identify the bank and then it “filters” the transaction to determine the interchange rate and the cost to Elavon. The transaction is sent to the Card issuing bank and posted to the cardholder’s account. The issuing bank charges Elavon an Interchange fee for the transaction (which covers the issuer’s services). The issuing bank then sends the difference funds and the interchange fee. The Issuing Bank will bill the cardholder or draft their DDA if using a check card.
  • A Code 10 request will allow a merchant to obtain additional information without alerting the cardholder. Code 10 request is a good idea if there is a large shipment to be sent overseas. NOTE: For Code 10 requests for other card types American Express and Discover have different phone numbers AX – 800-528-2121 (verifies names and addresses) DI – 800-341-3102
  • Interchange refers to the money paid from the Acquirer to the debit or credit card issuer for every transaction. In certain circumstances Interchange may be paid from the issuer to the acquirer. The level of interchange is determined by many different factors according to the way the transaction occurred and the type of card used. Interchange balances the card payment system. Interchange Fees are one component of the Merchant Discount Rate, which is paid by merchants to their banks when they accept credit and debit cards for purchases.
  • The more information that is added to the transaction, the better the transaction will qualify. There are 6 categories that can be used for Elavon merchants: Qualified Mid Qualified (or Partial) Non-Qualified Check Card rates Rewards Cards (introduced in April 05) Commercial Non Qualified
  • Terminal programs and features are designed and added by our Terminal Management department to help merchants be more secure and meet their needs based on entry method and card type. Address Verification Service (AVS) Last 4 prompt Key vs Swipe Settlement (Time frame and Auto Close) Customer Code / Tax Folio Number (Lodging) Continue to educate the merchant on how his / her transactions can better qualify through Interchange.
  • A list of sic codes can be located on the InfoCenter. Having the correct sic code will ensure the merchant qualifies at the best and most cost effective interchange category
  • Now on a disc and sent with merchant starter kit Processing Limit: Elavon can set a cap for the $ amount/transaction volume as was set in the merchant application. Elavon can change or modify the amounts at any given time. Term and Termination: 3 years contract Honoring Cards: Merchant must accept international cards for Associations that you have agreed to accept, even if you only choose to accept V or MC
  • Have people turn to the various pages mentioned to get them comfortable with using this as a resource.
  • Have someone read the slide The funds for the disputed transaction are debited from the merchant’s designated checking account. These funds are credited to the cardholder or the issuing bank while the dispute is being resolved. The merchant must provide the documentation that is requested by the Elavon Chargeback Department within the required timeframes. If the Chargeback is successfully disputed then the funds will be credited back to the merchant. NOTE: Chargebacks are 15.00/per transaction not each time that it is represented.
  • Have someone read the slide Merchants have a specific timeframe in which to respond to the retrieval request. If the request was in response to a disputed sale and the merchant fails to respond within the proper timeframes, the dispute will be resolved in favor of the cardholder resulting in a Chargeback. To increase the speed of this process, sales reps are encouraged to setup merchants with the option to receive retrieval requests via fax. This is a fail safe method, if for some reason the fax for a retrieval does not go through, a report is generated at Elavon and the retrieval request is mailed to the merchant.
  • Most common Chargeback reason code – Cardholder does not recognize or did not participate in transaction VISA Chargeback Changes for 2004: All chargeback and retrieval documentation will be electronically transmitted using Visa Resolve Online instead of US mail. Second cycle chargebacks will be eliminated. Issuers will be required to submit a pre-arbitration or file arbitration directly with Visa if they do not agree with the representment. In addition, they will hold liability for the transaction in dispute until resolution. All pre-compliance and pre-arbitration cases will be sent and received electronically using Visa Resolve Online. Chargeback life cycle will be reduced from 315 days (maximum) to 150 days (maximum). Reason codes will be consolidated into 6 groupings. Reason codes will be reduced from 44 to 24. Arbitration cases will be filed electronically using Visa Resolve Online. MasterCard Changes No reported changes at this time

  • Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover each offer No Signature Chargeback protection programs for merchants that fall within certain MCC’s (MCC list attached).  If a merchant is setup for Contactless/QPS through MSP Boarding will automatically register them for the program as long as they fall within the MCC requirements indicated on the attached. If they do not qualify for the benefits the merchant may choose to retain their no signature functionality, however they will not receive the no signature chargeback protection benefits.  To set up merchants with QPS/No Signature check "Quickpay (QPS) No Signature" using MSP Fast, select the QPS No Signature option on the Programming Instructions Page. To set up merchants with Contactless check "Contactless" in the Programming Instructions Page on MSP Fast. Using the Merchant Application, please indicate QPS and/or Contactless in the Terminal Prompts section of the Sales Worksheet. (NOTE: If Contactless is selected the ViVOpay4000 should also be disclosed as an equipment type).
  • In 2004, Visa’s P ayment A pplications B est P ractice (PABP) was launched and renamed to PA-DSS by Visa in April 2008. PABP was to assist merchants in data security. PA-DSS is P ayment A pplication D ata S ecurity which has placed a global set of security requirements to help merchants prevent compromise and storage of critical transaction data including mag-stripe data, CVV and/or pin information. Newly boarded merchants must be utilizing a product that is PABP compliant and registered with Visa effective October 1, 2008. A complete listing of the certified applications can be found at www.visa.com/pabp . Q: What if your merchant has proprietary or in-house software that they have certified directly to the Elavon network? A: If they are not listed on the Compliant Certification list or available in MSPFast, the vendor will need to supply a letter from Visa or a Qualified Security Assessor (QSA) showing compliance with Visa’s requirements.

    • The card data is read via a secure chip, and often times the account number on the chip is different than the number on the mag-stripe or front of card.  This is an added security feature.   For this reason Contactless read cards do not require last 4 digit prompting (which speeds up the transaction).
