Embracing Retirement
If you are planning on retiring or have just retired, join us at the
Central Library when we host the Commons: Embracing Retirement.
This event will feature guest speakers Rick Atkinson, author of Don’t Just Retire- Live It, Love It! and
Jane Robson, a financial planner from RBC Royal Bank. These speakers will talk about the different
facets of retirement: mental and physical health, finances, pursuing personal activities/interests
and family.

The Library provides a venue for compelling presentations, panel discussions, debates and community
discussions on topics that matter to local residents. Topics can cover social, political or cultural ideas; they can
be serious or light-hearted, timely or timeless.
Express your views, ignite debate and create conversations. If you are an inspiring speaker looking for a venue to
share your voice, if your organization would like to get involved in the Commons, or if you would like to provide
us with feedback or topic ideas, please share this information with Library staff at thecommons@picnet.org.

Dear Pickering Residents:
The Public Libraries Act requires each community in
Ontario to appoint a Board to govern their Public Library.
This year, Council appointed eight new and returning
representatives to the Board which stands as a glowing
example of citizen empowerment.
Your Library Board has three major aims:
(1) To set priorities for our libraries based on community
feedback;
(2) To oversee the work of the CEO/Chief Librarian
through internal monitoring, external reports, and direct
inspection; and
(3) To link with Pickering residents to ensure ongoing
matching of library services with community needs and
values.
In 2014, the Board approved a new strategic plan which
set the priorities for the Library. Community feedback
was obtained by surveys, stakeholder labs and street
teams. We heard the desires of our neighbours and
identified library priorities that reflected these desires.
We directed the Library’s CEO, Cathy Grant, to ensure that
all Pickering residents will have equal access to the
resources, information and ideas that will enrich their
civic, corporate and personal lives; to build a culture of
reading in our community; to facilitate valued and
innovative lifelong learning; and to do it in partnership
with our community. Your Board will ensure that these
priorities are met in the most cost-effective manner.
In addition, the Board will continue to advocate to
Pickering Council for expanded space at our Central
Library. Studies have shown this Library is too small for
current use and does not allow for service enhancements
that are wanted by the community. Pickering Public
Library is an award winning engine of innovation; an
anchor of digital literacy and access; and an outstanding
economic value in our community. I believe that an
expansion of our Central Library is overdue!

Celebrate Black History Month
Screening of Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (all ages)
At the Central Library:

The Congress of Black Women, Ajax/Pickering chapter, will be screening Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story in
celebration of Black History Month. The film is a biography of Ben Carson who grew up to become Dr. Ben
Carson, a world famous neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland.
African Folktales (2 to 5 years)

Celebrate Black History Month by watching puppet shows based on African folktales. Make an African inspired
craft to take home.

Do you want to develop your public speaking skills? Effective public speakers become better leaders. Gain
experience in public speaking in a fun interactive environment through Toastmasters Youth Leadership. Due to

Do you enjoy writing? If so, submit a story for the Library’s March Break Short Story Contest.
Fully completed entry form must accompany story. Entry form can be downloaded at:
The story can be no longer than two pages.
The story must begin with the line, “Climbing to the next branch I heard a rip and…”
The font size, if typed, must be at least 12 points.
Writers must have their own valid Pickering Public Library card.
Entries will be divided into the following age categories: JK- SK, grades 1 - 2, 3 - 4, 5 - 6, 7 - 8, 9 - 12.
Writers must submit their story by email to kids@picnet.org by Saturday, March 19.
All winning entries will be published in a short story anthology by the Library in print and e-book

creativity come alive. Using old books, CD cases, and CDs supplied by the Library, participants must construct a
piece of art using the supplies given to them by Teen staff. Participants can pick up their package the week of
April 11th
at the Central Library.
Book Spine Poetry Challenge
(12 to 18 years)
At the Central Library and Petticoat Creek Branch:
Month of April
Time to unleash your inner Emily Dickinson! For poetry
month we are challenging youth to grab some YA books,
stack them on top of each other, and use the words on the
spine to create poetry! Once you do this, take a picture of
the stacked books and tag the library. Your name will be
entered into the ballot box for an awesome prize! Any of the
platforms to the right are acceptable to upload your photo
and tag the Library.

Voice Over IP (VOIP)
Making a phone call these days can be done without the use of a landline or mobile phone. VOIP is a way of
making phone calls using the power of the Internet. Learn how to make phone calls (even long distance) using
Google Hangouts, Skype and even through Gmail. Other free chat tools will also be discussed.
Portrait Photography
Learn the basics of photographing people. Learn about the various types of cameras, lenses, lighting and other
equipment needed to conduct a successful portrait shoot. Also learn about framing and composition, exposure
and posing your subjects. This workshop will be part lecture and part hands-on.
Ancestry.com: Library Edition
Wednesday, April 20 and Wednesday, May 11 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm
Ancestry.com is one of the most popular sites for researching your family tree and you can access it in the Library
for free! This class will include an introduction to good genealogy practices with a hands-on demonstration of
how to search Ancestry.com. This program is aimed at both beginner and experienced genealogists.
Learn about technology in the Learning Lab at the Central Library.
Registration is required for all Learning Lab programs and begins January 5.
Introduction to Mac OS X

Learn the basics of Apple’s desktop operating system for Macintosh computers. Learn how to navigate the
unique graphical user interface of Mac OS X. Special emphasis will be placed on migrating to Mac OS X from
Microsoft Windows.

Learn about the world’s largest social network: Facebook. After you take this class, you’ll know the basics of
Facebook. Attendees must have a valid email address and a Facebook account prior to the class.
International Scratch Day

Join us for International Scratch Day! Scratch is a programming language which allows you to make your own
interactive stories, games and animations -- and use the Library's Makey-Makey boards for more fun! This one
