  2. 2. Introduc/on   •  Smart  Ci)es  –  Big  Data  used  to  make   decisions/predic)ons  about  ci)es   •  Growing  need  for  data  access  in  urban   research  and  urban  planning  decisions   •  Data  hard  to  find/use   •  Australian  Urban  Research   Infrastructure  Network  (AURIN)   established  to  address  these  issues
  3. 3. AURIN  Approach   •  Facilitate  merited  based  access  to  distributed   data   •  Tools  to  find,  interrogate,  analyze  and  visualize   data  and  support  good  research  methodologies   •  Enable  researchers  to  share  results,  interact  and   collaborate   •  Allow  data  providers  to  keep  control  of  the  data   and  their  use   •  Establishing  Data  Hubs  across  Australia  to  enable   simple  data  access  and  distribu)on
  4. 4. Data  Hub  Concept     Data   Owner   Data   User   Data   Owner/ User   Data   Owner   Data   User   Data   User   Data   User   DATA   HUB
  5. 5. Data  Hubs  –  Global  Context   •  Applied  to  many  fields,  incl.  Urban  Research   – INSPIRE   – Urban  Audit  hNp://www.urbanaudit.org/   – Buildings  Performance  Ins)tute  Europe   hNp://www.bpie.eu/
  6. 6. Data  Hubs  –  Global  Context   •  Applied  to  many  fields,  incl.  Urban  Research   – Open  Data  Ini)a)ves–  global  applica)ons  based   on  OKF  CKAN  plaQorm  hNp://ckan.org/   – Open  Knowledge  Founda)on  (OKF)  Data  Hub   hNp://www.datahub.io/

  8. 8. AURIN  Data  Hubs   •  AURIN  Objec)ve:  Improve  collec)on  and   integra)on  of  urban  research  datasets   •  AURIN  Data  Hubs  facilitate  direct  data  access,   through  AURIN  portal  to  key  datasets   – Na)onal  Government   – State  Government   – Local  Government   – Research  Ins)tu)ons   – Private  Industry
  9. 9.  AURIN  Data  Hubs
  10. 10. AURIN  Data  Hubs   •  A  Data  Hub  facilitates  collabora)on  and  interac)on   between  end  users  and  data  custodians
  11. 11. AURIN  Data  Hubs   •  Data  should  be  held  as  close  to  the  source  as   possible   •  Data  Hubs  should  be  set  up  to  serve  a  broad   end-‐user  community,  not  a  single  project.   •  Sufficient  informa)on  will  be  provided  for  users   to  understand  data.
  12. 12.  Melbourne  Data  Hub   •  Signed  off  by  7  Secretaries  across  Victorian  Government   •  Unlocked  over  120  dataset  to  urban  researchers  via  the   AURIN  portal   •  Data  ingested  from  12  separate  data  custodians
  13. 13.  Melbourne  Data  Hub   •  User/stakeholder  groups  iden)fied  relevant  urban  data   •  Data  Hub  established  using  GeoServer  at  UoM   •  Custodians  contribute  data  to  single  distribu)on  loca)on   •  AURIN  only  one  user  of  many  –  integrated  into  research  tools:   –  Walkability   –  Employment   –  Housing   –  Health

  16. 16. Conclusion   •  Data  Hubs  increase  ease  of  data  discovery  and   use   •  Mul)ple  Data  Hubs  successfully  integrated  in   the  AURIN  plaQorm   •  AURIN  Data  Hubs  can  be  used  in  external   urban  research  applica)ons   •  AURIN  is  implemen/ng  the  Data  Hubs   concept  to  support  urban  research  in   Australia
  17. 17. Next  Steps   •  Con)nue  discussions  with  data  custodians  to   determine  future  possible  data  hubs   •  Further  inves)gate  data.gov.au  sites  for  their   poten)al  as  data  hubs   •  Inves)gate  consuming  live  data  feeds  form  Data   Hubs   •  Develop  common  framework  for  establishing  new   Data  Hub   •  Examine  opportuni)es  to  expand/scale-‐up  exis)ng   data  hubs  to  support  new  users/applica)ons  beyond   the  current  AURIN  project
