Teaching is effective…- It happens with Astronomy, when it helps students: to develop Space/Time concepts, essential for understanding the world - to adapt their education to the requirements of everyday life - to find that what they learned at school is to be found again and again beyond the school walls. Astronomy can take a great contribution in education: let’s use this opportunity!
COMENIUS PROJECT M.E.T.E.R Measuring the Earth Through European students’ Research “MERIDIANI E MERIDIANE” IN ROME AT THE VERNAL EQUINOX Responsabile del Progetto Prof.ssa Leonarda Fucili
to Belli middle school. It’ s nice to have you here and we are happy to work with you on the Comenius project.
We hope you have a good time in Rome and at our school.
We’re classmates and good friends and we would like to become friends also with you, girls and boys coming from different directions of Europe: from East, Athens in Greece; from North East, Oradea in Romania; from North, Amsterdam in The Netherland; from North West, Birmingham in England and Lyon in France.
In our class we are studying astronomy and special programs like the one, called “METER”, we’re sharing with you.
The first astronomy project, called “THE ASTRONOMICAL TERRACE, A LAB BETWEEN THE EARTH AND THE SKY”, started several years ago and it has grown with our school. In fact now our school has its own astronomy lab and an astronomical terrace where we perform experiments and make observations.
However, Rome itself is an open museum, perhaps the biggest outdoor museum in the world. Rome has wonderful ancients monuments famous all over the world, but perhaps you don’t know that you can visit monumental sundials and a lot of places in Rome with an astronomical point of view.
With our astronomy teacher Fucili we have visited and performed workshops in several of them and you also will do the same in this week: we will be happy to show you the most important and beautiful places.
Rome is a special city and the period around the vernal equinox is a special time for the visit.
We hope you’ll enjoy to discover Rome as an astronomical city!
