With agrowing population needing medical assistance, the government is faced with thedaunting task of giving every Filipino equal access to quality healthcare.While these are pressing problems in the Philippines, the developed countries are alsohaving their own challenges—growing ageing population, rising medical costs, longwaiting line, and poor quality of care are some of the more evident concerns.However, the Philippines’ resources are different. What they lack in human resources,this country is abounding. Conversely, they have the facilities and financial resourcesthat may not be sufficiently available in the Philippines.The world has indeed turned flat. And with the advent of technology, everythingincluding healthcare services is now being outsourced and traded. For several years,the Filipino healthcare professionals have become a growing export providing care tothousands or even millions of people in over 130 countries. But the trend is changing.Patients are now also willing to cross beyond their country’s borders in search for thebest healthcare treatment—a phenomenon called Global Healthcare Travel or Cross-Border Healthcare. The Philippines is recognized as a key emerging destination in Asiafor this growing industry. In fact, some of the Philippine hospitals are seen reaping itseconomic benefits.The Philippines’ healthcare sector is at a trajectory. From being a contributor to publicexpenditure, it has shown potential into becoming an engine of economic growth thatwill help in generating revenues back to the local healthcare system by harnessing thecountry’s best resources – an army of competent and compassionate healthcareprofessionals, state-of-the-art healthcare facilities, spas and wellness centers, traditionalalternative medicine, and retirement havens. The job of a Leader (read CEO) in this scenario is definitely stressful. No wonder, one study by the American College of Healthcare Executives, found the turnover rate of Hospital/Healthcare CEOs increase to 18 % last year up from 14% in 2008. Managing in this rapidly changing environment needs Leaders who are not only credentialed in the core business, but also know the process, aligned with clinical governance and have the special skills to embrace this change for improvement. The skills to lead and prioritize, in the face of conflicting priorities, to be a proactive leader in building a shared vision and promote shared values go a long way in building teams which can deliver.
