WMU RF and RFID The WMU College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) is uniquely situated to provide RFID training, to provide advanced RFID system engineering support, and to perform directed research into the technologies needed by Southwestern Michigan companies. The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in the CEAS has the faculty, facilities, and resources to provide educational opportunities, to perform advanced RF communications systems research and development, and to service and support the wireless communication projects of companies interested in collaborating with WMU. 18-Jan-05 3

RFID Lab Goals 1) Provide an RFID resource center offering system engineering support and services for Southwestern Michigan; 2) Provide technical and theoretical training for RFID users, implementers, and developers; 3) Define and develop RFID system solutions for non-mainstream, challenging environments and implementations, and 4) Research critical technology to improve the accuracy, reliability, and performance of RFID systems toward the goal of achieving 100 percent reading of RFID tags for all perishable and non-perishable products. 18-Jan-05 4

Laboratory Testing Opportunities Access to the RFID Lab and equipment can be arranged with Dr. Bazuin Alien RFID Development Kit Software Available Alternate or custom software must be supplied by user A limited number of RFID Tags can be supplied Additional RFID Tags must be purchased by user Dr. Bazuin will provide an overview of what is available in the laboratory and brief initial support. If student support is desired, a graduate student assistant may be available. 18-Jan-05 15
  16. 16. On-site “One-Week” Trial For rapid one-day to one-week trials, the RFID portal and equipment can be moved to a user’s site for simple testing. Coordination with Dr. Bazuin will be required Overall test planning, portal placement determination, RFID Tag attachment, and data collection and processing plans must be performed prior to the test. Dr. Bazuin will be available as scheduling allows. For test software and data collection: BlueGranite/MBG Marketing has developed and demonstrated trial based software for performing RFID TAG data collection One trial available at no cost, for additional trials a grant and a material donation will be requested. 18-Jan-05 16

Extended On-Site Trial A Draft Extended Trial including paid support for Dr. Bazuin and a graduate student assistance is available through WMU or indirectly through the RFID Technology Center Tasks include: Trial planning and initial system engineering. RF site survey. RFID Laboratory model system testing (~ 4 weeks). RFID trial site system engineering design. RFID on-site trial and demonstration (~ 4 weeks).
