RFID-Enabled Patient Identification and Information System What is an RFID-Wristband? – A wristband embedded with an RFID tag (microchip and antenna), RFID wristbands provide storage and wireless read/write capability of patient information for positive patient identification and streamlined operations. “Alvin RFID Enabled Patient Identification and Information System” uniquely provides healthcare organization with improved services and increased efficiencies by replacing time- consuming and error-prone manual processes with a seamless real-time wireless information system. Upon admission, patients are issued with RFID wristbands with patient’s information and medical record number (MRN) encoded on the RFID chip. RFID printer encodes the information on the RFID chip and also prints human-readable information on the wristband. Hospital personnel can identify patients simply by waving their RFID enabled Pocket-PCs or Tablet-PCs over patient’s RFID wristband and instantaneously bring up detailed patient RFID-Enabled Pocket PC information- such as problems, past monitored information (E.g. Temperature, Blood pressure), lab results, medication list, allergy list… - from a central database over a wireless connection. Alvin solutions change the way doctors and nurses interact with patients by empowering them to quickly identify a patient and, retrieve, review and update patients’ medical information right from the bedside. Medical staff do not have to return to nursing station to obtain patient data, which is of paramount importance in emergency treatment, because with the RFID enabled patient information system medical staff can gain access to patient records more instantly. Nurse ward operations are revolutionized as never before. Nurses, equipped with mobile RFID terminals, can visit and identify patients with their RFID wristbands which can be scanned when the lights are turned off or through clothing and bedcovers, thereby causing no patient disruption. Upon identifying the patient, detailed patient information as well as the specific tasks and medication information for the current patient visit is retrieved and displayed from the central database over a wireless connection. When the nurse finishes her tasks such as giving the correct medicines or recording temperature of the patient as specified in her mobile terminal, she RFID Wristband Printer simply updates the corresponding screen and saves the information to the central database. If there is no wireless connection, the mobile terminal stores the visited patient’s updated status information on its local cache and updates the central database when the nurse returns to ward’s nursing station where there is a network connection. Traditionally, while visiting patients, nurses take notes on paper and re-enter them using a computer at nursing station. RFID and wireless enabled mobile terminals replaces this error-prone and labor-intensive paper-bound system with a real-time, new- generation wireless system, thus, doctors and administrators can monitor conditions of patients and nursing activities in real-time. Doctors, equipped with RFID enabled large-screen Tablet-PCs, can quickly identify a patient, retrieve comprehensive medical records, review patient’s recovery status, check past medical logs which have been recorded by nurses via their RFID mobile terminals. RFID Enabled Patient Identification and Information System Demonstration This demonstration focuses on nurse ward operations and showcases the basic demonstration of RFID enabled patient identification and real-time information management in synchronization with a central database over a wireless connection. 1. Nurses, equipped with RFID-enabled Pocket PCs and Alvin Healthcare Software platform, can be provided with numerous features depending on hospital’s custom needs such as an real-time hospital information portal. 2. By clicking the “SCAN” button (Figure 1), nurse can easily identify a patient by bringing the terminal close to patient’s wristband. RFID wristbands can be identified in dark and through clothing or human body. (Figure 1) 3. Upon identifying the unique patient ID, the detailed patient information is automatically retrieved from the central database and displayed on Pocket PC screen. (Figure 2) 4. Nurse can retrieve even more detailed information by clicking “Info” buttons for respective information. For example, in the case of emergency, by clicking the “Doctor Info” button, current contact info and location of patient’s doctor can be retrieved immediately. (Figure 2) (Figure 3) 5. By clicking “Tasks” button (Figure 2), the nurse is presented with the tasks retrieved from a central database for the respective ward and patient. (Figure 3) Upon completing the tasks for the current patient visit - such as recording temperature and giving the specified medicines - nurse updates the Tasks screen and by clicking “Save” button, all updates are instantly saved in central database. Thereby, administrators and doctors can monitor the current nursing activities and patient conditions in real-time from their computers. Alvinsystems.com 5
  • 6. Medical Item / Asset Identification and Tracking Medication & Asset Management: Management of medicines and medical items is challenging in many respects for many hospitals. With intuitive RFID enabled check-in and check-outs or RFID enabled cabinet compartments, keeping track of inventory can be automated simply by identifying and logging items as they are removed or returned by whom and at what time. Particularly, by affixing medical items and supplies with RFID tags, administrative monitoring can be automated for inventory management, quality assurance, shelf life management and access control. Identification and tracking of larger items and assets such as mobile electronic medical equipment or wheel chairs can also be achieved by installing a specifically designed long- range RFID infrastructure at critical access points, such as surgery room doors. Specimen, Blood Samples and Transfusion Management: Affixing vials, blood sample tubes and plastic containers with specifically designed RFID tags, enables healthcare organizations to achieve significant reductions in administration time and prevent errors, both during sampling and laboratory processing. With an RFID enabled sample management process, the doctor or nurse taking the patient sample enters the patient information into a hand-held RFID device or scans the patient’s RFID wristband at the start of the sampling process. This data along with other data is stored on the patient’s or donator’s RFID tagged sample or blood container and later can be identified by any RFID reader enabling error-free fully automated process. Laboratory item identification and management: By leveraging RFID, medical laboratories can achieve phenomenal efficiencies in identifying, tracking and management of laboratorial items such as test tubes containing patient samples. Test tubes affixed with small RFID tags containing unique IDs can be used for locating individual ones among the hundreds in the lab at any given time simply by waving the mobile RFID reader through the test tubes. Upon identification, detailed information can be retrieved from a central database enabling hassle-free laboratory item and inventory management. Staff and Surgical Garment Inventory Management: In medical organizations management of vast number of garment inventory is problematic and resource consuming- staff uniforms, surgical garment, sheets and bed covers, just to name a few. Affixing specifically designed permanent RFID tags to garments can automate tracking and tracing the overall garment inventory in laundry processing, increase quality control and provide significant productivity enhancements.
