Volcanic Eruptions• Actually, volcaniceruption cool the Earth.• This is because the ashfrom the eruption stopsthe Sun’s radiation fromreaching the Earth, making it cooler.• The Mount Pinatuboeruption of 1991 cooledthe whole earth by 1°C!
Sun Spots• The sun has an 11year cycle of activity.• At its most active itcan produce manysun spots which sendsolar energy to Earth. These are thought tochange weatherpatterns and warmthe planet butevidence is not clear.
Transport• Now people use carsmore often pollutants arerising.• In 2004 British carscreated 120 milliontonnes of carbon dioxide• Aeroplanes are furtherwarming the planet, adding more than 700million tonnes of carbondioxide each year.
Industry• 36% of the World’s CO2 is produced by industry.• This production has increased further each year,by 61% between 1971 and 2004• Positively, many industries have become moreefficient, so are emitting less carbon.
Deforestation• Every minute 2,000 trees arecut down around the world. These trees store CO2within them. When the treesare cut down, this isreleased back into theatmosphere helping to warmthe planet.• If the cleared land is used forcattle, large amounts ofmethane will be releasedinto the atmosphere, warming the Earth further.
Population growth• As population grows, there are more andmore pressures onland for food, resources andenergy. There arealso more peopleproducing wastewhich is helping towarm the planet
Rubbish and Waste• We all want the latestgadget, but it has tocome from somewhere, and where does the oldone go? To create yournew products takesenergy and creates alot of waste.
Energy Production• A lot of the energy weuse to power our homescomes from non-renewable energysources.• This is using up valuableresources, but alsopumping out harmfulwaste into theatmosphere which iswarming it.• Coal power stations areparticularly bad• How could we make thisbetter?
Eating Meat• Cows release vast quantities of methane whichis one of the more harmful greenhouse gasses.• Cows also have to graze on land which wouldhave previously been woodland, reducing thecarbon store
Explain why higher levels of greenhouse gasescause a rise in global temperatures (4 marks)• Identify a greenhouse gas and say they haveincreased over the years (1)• Rise in GHG traps solar radiation (1)• Solar radiation is reflected back from the surfaceof the earth (1)• This heats the atmosphere from below/the insideand as ice melts CO2 is released (1)
