  • 2. § Amazon started as an online bookseller § Diversified to CDs, DVDs, electronics, toys and other categories § Redefined itself in the cloud computing infrastructure business § And became one of the most important companies in the world
  • 3. VISION The everything store (a store with infinite selection) Jeff Bezos had the vision… of a shop with infinite selection, a shop where you could find anything and cheaper than anywhere else.
  • 4. VISION FIRST VISION: Make every book in print available to everybody, everywhere in the world
  • 5. Everything started with books
  • 6. Why books? § In the early 90s, Jeff Bezos made a list of possible product categories: office supplies, DVDs, computer software, clothes, music… § The category that seemed to be best option was books
  • 7. Why books? § Books are pure commodities and therefore, buyers always knew what they were getting. It would help overcome the fear of buying of the first internet customers without them having seen the product. § Books are easy to stock and to ship by post. § And, most important, there were thousands of books in print worldwide, far more than any traditional book store retailer could ever stock.
  • 8. Everything started in Seattle Amazon’s Headquarters are located in Seattle, Washington, USA.
  • 9. Why Seattle? § Technology cluster: Seattle was a technology Hub. Microsoft and other high tech companies were based there at the time. § Human capital: The University of Washington produced highly qualified computer science graduates. § Suppliers: Ingram one of the two major book distributors was situated in the area. § State Sales Tax Rates: Better tax conditions.
  • 10. The Team Bezos started Amazon in 1994 in the garage of the home he rented in Bellevue, Seattle, Washington Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and CEO Shel Kaphan, Amazon’s first employee. Kaphan planned Amazon's technical foundation, from the computer networks to the search tool allowing consumers to locate titles.
