But what is required of you as a member of Flickr?

Firstly, Flickr is a service provided by Yahoo! Inc...

…meaning that you HAVE to accept the terms of service provided by Yahoo!
(Flickr pro Additional Terms of Service, n.d).

The Terms of Service by the Yahoo! network (Yahoo! 7 Pty Ltd, 2009) specify that members are solely responsible for any content that they transmit using their service

Flickr members also have to abide by the Community Guidelines in conjunction with the Yahoo! Terms of Service

So as well as taking sole responsibility for what content they upload,
Flickr members must also be responsible for classifying their photostream appropriately (The Flickreenos, 2009)

Also against Flickr by Yahoo!’s terms of service is the uploading of illegal and/or prohibited content (Yahoo!7 Pty Ltd, 2009)…

..and content that users are obliged not to disclose under any law or under contractual or fiduciary relationships (Yahoo!7 Pty Ltd, 2009).

If you don’t flag your content appropriately, or you upload illegal /prohibited content you have no right to disclose..

other members on the community orientated site can flag them for you or report an abuse of ToS against you… (The Flickreenos, 2009).

.. to provide safe viewing not only for children..

… but also to members with a Yahoo! ID based in Singapore, Hong Kong or Korea, whose content is filtered to only display safe content. (Flickr, n.da.)

Responsibility over content also means that Flickr users are not to post content that infringe on copyright (Yahoo!7 Pty Ltd, 2009).

This is an important pressing issue that is also stressed in Flickr’s Community Guidelines and Yahoo!7’s copyright and IP Policy page.

As The Flickreenos(2009) like to put it:
“DON’T UPLOAD ANYTHING THAT ISN’T YOURS”

It is up to Flickr members to contact the user infringing on copyright and tell them to stop.

While Yahoo! (2009) claims no responsibility over what users post, they do provide in their Copyright and Intellectual Property policy an avenue to have copyright infringement investigated.

If successful, in conjunction with their Terms of Service and Community Guidelines, Flickr users found to infringe on copyright will have their service terminated. (Yahoo!7 Pty Ltd, 2009).

And if users WANT to share the use of their image with other users?

They have the freedom and responsibility of selecting appropriate Creative Commons licenses for their Flickr content to match their comfort of sharing.

This responsibility means that Flickr users who use Creative Common licenses should be aware that Yahoo! is not liable for any loss or damage created by external resources. (Yahoo!7 Pty Ltd., 2009)

This is particularly important if you have uploaded against the terms of services and transmitted content to Flickr where you do not own the copyright (flickr, n.db)

To play nicely.
As a community orientated site, Flickr encourage polite and respectable behaviour(The Flickreenos, 2009).

Failure to abide by Yahoo!’s Terms of Service and Flickr’s Community Guidelines will result in the termination of your service…

…without prior notice (Yahoo!7 Pty Ltd, 2009).

Users who don’t feel comfortable with this are asked to rethink whether or not they should use their service (The Flickreenos, 2009).
