  • I’m Paul, and I take pictures of people with their Razors, and dented Camry bumpers for CamryDents.com, I love Puma Shoes, spent $300 on a plastic bear, and have a autographed Mr Potato Head.
  • My resume looks like a IMDB profile, at least two employers a year for the past ten years. I applied for a job out at Fort Knox, and I had to list my extra experience on three additional sheets.
  • I’m not a professional student, I’m a professional job seeker. In the past 12 months I’ve interviewed at 18 companies, underlined is the Louisville companies. ZirMed, Humana, Coke, PapaJohn, PetFirst,Global Air
  • The search is give and take, find out what people need, and give it to them. Eventually they will need you, and you can give it to them. Remember ‘working’ people are busy, and you have to have a strong value to them for them to keep them communicating.
  • Ask your friends if there is a good recruiter their company works with, or first interview the recruiter. To yourself, assign your recruiters to companies. Only let one recruiter rep you at a company. Keep relationships with all the recruiters you can.
  • Recruiters & HR: they get 500 resumes for the job. Bold the things you want them to look at, pull competencies out at top, and remember resumes are a little like fire hydrants, most people will not need your’s, but that one person will really need it.
  • Hiring managers need results for their departments, but they also want someone that will culturally fit in. Identify those you want to work with and start a dialog - give them something you think they need, and find out the managers that you personally like.
  • Louisville is built on deep and meaningful relationships, not loose ones like other communities. Find a manager or two you resonate with on a personal level, then cultivate that relationship. This is what Louisville does really well - deep relationships.
  • Hiring managers often want a PM that will take initiative, and sending them an email requesting career advice lets you do that. Find them through networking online and off line, then talk to them about your situation. There is a strong culture of community here in Louisville.
  • What’s great about Louisville is everybody knows everybody. You are one, maybe two degrees of separation away from the CEO of any Louisville company. Tell people what you want, you can get it in Louisville. Louisville is a real life linkedIn.
  • Louisville is small, a few months ago I wanted to cultivate a relationship with someone from Humana, then I got that person’s resume for a position at Smoothstone. Find the people that are right for you, then build a communication channel and relationship with those people.
  • When I got back from Austin, I identified the Innovation Center as a good place for me, so I created artifacts for them, that they would appreciate. My resume was followed up with a small marketing campaign that included a slide deck on why I wanted to work there.
  • GlassDoor.com is great, there is salary data, and anonymous interview and job reviews. It’s a great place to do some research. Also, there are a few local and professional linedIn groups that you can use to build your professional stock.
  • Recruiting agencies often sponsor monthly career specific events, ask them what they sponsor. For example I went to a Drupal meeting yesterday that was sponsored by a recruiter. There is also Louisville PM, a privately owned but open community of local project managers.
  • This is a list of a few current positions in the are a open.
